Expanding Circles

First choose any US city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name any US city in each 100 mile circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice, trying to name SECOND LARGEST city in each circle. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer.

PLEASE NOTE - You must type a '.' (period) after each city to submit it to prevent answering another city with a name you would be have to type to get your answer. If multiple cities have the name you submitted, only the largest one will be counted.

You accumulate points based on the population of the city you named in relation to the second largest city in the circle. A smaller city’s point total will be the ratio of its population to the largest, so if you name a city of 75K people and the largest city has 100K, you get 75 points. Naming the largest city will get you points based on the ratio of the 2nd largest city's population to the largest city's.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring’s 2nd largest city at right (under ‘Answer Stats’ by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose ‘Chicago’ – you will be shown a circle of radius 100 miles centered at Chicago. Naming any city in this circle (including Chicago) will cause another ‘ring’ of radius 100 miles to appear outside that circle, however - you will want to try naming the SECOND LARGEST city you can to get more points. After completing that circle, you now need to name any US city in the new ring (but not within any previous circles/rings), again trying to name the 2nd largest city. If there are not two cities within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until two cities fall within it.

First choose any US city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name the largest US city in each 25 mile circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer if it is the largest city in that area.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's correct answer at right (under 'Answer Stats' by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose 'Chicago, IL' - you will be shown a circle of radius 25 miles centered at Chicago. Naming the largest city in this circle (Chicago in this case) will cause another 'ring' of radius 25 miles to appear outside that circle. You now need to name the largest US city in that ring (but not within any previous circles/rings). If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. So if a city doesn't fall within 25-50 miles, it will expand to be a 25-75 mile ring, then 25-100 mile and so on until a qualifying city is found within the ring.

US 25 Mile Expanding Circles Challenge – Choose City

First choose any US city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name the 3 largest US cities in each 50 mile circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer if it is among the 3 largest in that area. As you enter cities you will see their rank within the current ring (1st, 2nd or 3rd largest) above their marker.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's correct answer at right (under 'Answer Stats' by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose 'Chicago, IL' - you will be shown a circle of radius 50 miles centered at Chicago. Naming all of the 3 largest cities in this circle (Chicago in this case is one) will cause another 'ring' of radius 50 miles to appear outside that circle. You now need to name the 3 largest US cities in that ring (but not within any previous circles/rings). If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until at least 1 city falls within it. So if a city doesn't fall within 50-100 miles, it will expand to be a 50-150 mile ring, then 50-200 mile and so on until a qualifying city is found within the ring.

US 50 Mile Expanding Circles Challenge – Choose City

First choose any US city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name the 5 largest US cities in each 50 mile circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer if it is among the 5 largest in that area. As you enter cities you will see their rank within the current ring (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th largest) above their marker.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's correct answer at right (under 'Answer Stats' by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose 'Chicago, IL' - you will be shown a circle of radius 50 miles centered at Chicago. Want only one city per ring?
US 50 Mile Expanding Circles Challenge – Choose City

First choose a level by typing '5.', '10', '25' or '50' (need to add the '.' with 5 so you can type 50 without choosing '5') - then name the largest city in the circle/ring of that distance range as the rings expand outward from your location. You need to have your browser's location function working or the quiz will not load.

You MUST have a city within the initial distance you choose for your level - so this quiz will not work if you are not within the US (or at least not within your level's distance of a US city).

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's correct answer at right (under 'Answer Stats' by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose '10' - you will be shown a circle of radius 10 miles centered at your location. Naming the largest city in this circle will cause another 'ring' of radius 10 to appear outside that circle. You now need to name the largest city in that ring (but not within any previous circles/rings). If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. So if a city doesn't fall within 20-30 miles (assuming your level is 10 miles), it will expand to be a 20-40 mile ring, then 20-50 mile and so on until a city is found within the ring.
