US 5 Mile Expanding Circles Small City Challenge By State – Choose City

Directions

First choose any US city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name any US city in each 5 mile circle/ring IN THE SAME STATE as your chosen city as the rings expand outward from your city of choice, trying to name SMALLER cities instead of the easier, larger cities. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer.

PLEASE NOTE – You must type a ‘.’ (period) after each city to submit it to prevent answering another city with a name you would be have to type to get your answer – for example ‘Jackson’ would be answered trying to type ‘Jacksonville.’ If multiple cities have the name you submitted, only the smallest one will be counted.

You accumulate points based on the population of the city you named according to the following scale:
< 100 – 10 pts
100 – 499 – 8 pts
500 – 999 – 6 pts
1K – 4,999 – 4 pts
5K – 9,999 – 3 pts
10K – 24,999 – 2 pts
25K+ – 1 pt

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring’s smallest correct answer at right (under ‘Answer Stats’ by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose ‘Chicago’ – you will be shown a circle of radius 25 miles centered at Chicago. Naming any IL city in this circle (including Chicago) will cause another ‘ring’ of radius 5 miles to appear outside that circle, however – you will want to try naming the SMALLEST city you can to get more points (Chicago will only yield 1 point). After completing that circle, you now need to name any IL city in the new ring (but not within any previous circles/rings), again trying to name as small a city as possible. If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. So if a city doesn’t fall within 5-10 miles, it will expand to be a 5-15 mile ring, then 5-20 miles and so on until a qualifying city is found within the ring.

Enter starting city to choose from drop-down box...
