Expanding Circles

First choose any World 50K+ city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name the largest World 50K+ city in each 100km circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer if it is the largest 50K+ city in that area.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's correct answer at right (under 'Answer Stats' by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose 'Paris, France' - you will be shown a circle of radius 100km centered at Paris. Naming the largest city in this circle (Paris in this case) will cause another 'ring' of radius 100km to appear outside that circle. You now need to name the largest World 50K+ city in that ring (but not within any previous circles/rings). If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. So if a city doesn't fall within 200-300km, it will expand to be a 200-400km ring, then 200-500km and so on until a qualifying city is found within the ring.

World 200 Km Expanding Circles Challenge – Choose City

First choose any World 50K+ pop city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name any World 50K+ city in each 100 km circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice, trying to name LARGEST city in each circle. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer.

PLEASE NOTE - You must type a '.' (period) after each city to submit it to prevent answering another city with a name you would be have to type to get your answer. If multiple cities have the name you submitted, only the largest one will be counted.

You accumulate points based on the population of the city you named in relation to the largest city in the circle. Naming the largest city will get you 100 points. A smaller city’s point total will be the ratio of its population to the largest, so if you name a city of 75K people and the largest city has 100K, you get 75 points.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring’s largest correct answer at right (under ‘Answer Stats’ by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose ‘Paris’ – you will be shown a circle of radius 100 km centered at Paris. Naming any city in this circle (including Paris) will cause another ‘ring’ of radius 100 km to appear outside that circle, however - you will want to try naming the LARGEST city you can to get more points (Paris will be 100 points). After completing that circle, you now need to name any 50K+ World city in the new ring (but not within any previous circles/rings), again trying to name as large a city as possible. If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. So if a city doesn’t fall within 100-200 km, it will expand to be a 100-300 km ring, then 300-400 km and so on until a qualifying city is found within the ring.

Then, name the top 3 largest World 50K+ cities in each 200km circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer if it is in the top 3 largest 50K+ city in that area. As you enter cities you will see their rank within the current ring (1st, 2nd or 3rd largest) above their marker.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's largest correct answer at right (under 'Answer Stats' by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose 'Paris, France' - you will be shown a circle of radius 200km centered at Paris. Naming the 3 largest cities in this circle (such as Paris) will cause them to appear as green markers and when all 3 are named another 'ring' of radius 200km to appear outside that circle. You now need to name the 3 largest World 50K+ cities in that ring (but not within any previous circles/rings). If no city qualifies within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until at least one city falls within it. So if a city doesn't fall within 200-400km, it will expand to be a 200-600km ring, then 200-800km and so on until at least one qualifying city is found within the ring.

You need to have your browser's location function working or the quiz will not load.

You MUST have a city within the initial distance you choose for your level - so this quiz will not work if you are not within a 50K+ city at the distance you chose to begin with.
