US Random Grid Population Challenge
DirectionsFirst choose a grid size by typing ’10’, ‘5’ or ‘2.5’. A randomly-placed grid of that size lat/long will be placed on the map (so if you choose ’10’ the grid width and height will be 10 degrees). Then, double click on the grid square with the highest population within it (based on US census tract information). The highest-population remaining square will give you 100 points, all the way down to 0 for the one with the smallest population. Try to obtain the most points by successively double-clicking on the highest-populated grid square.
Issue with Aleutian islands grids not registering should be good now.
Cool, thanks! Just curious, do you mind sharing what the issue was?
Was not calculating the grid square correctly when it crossed over 180 degrees line
Ah, interesting. I had that intuition, but there was a Hawaii cell right below it that didn’t seem to have the problem. I wonder if it’s because the Hawaii cell didn’t have population west of 180?
This format has been such a terrific addition to the site! Probably my favorite quiz format now. Looking forward to seeing how it works for other geographies. Thanks for such a great site.
