Indonesia Largest Cities
DirectionsFirst choose the number of cities by typing ‘100’, ‘250’, or ‘500’ – then try to achieve the highest population among the largest Indonesia cities you chose. Quiz is not timed. Cities included places classified as either a ‘city’ or an ‘urban commune’ by the Indonesia census.
hugequiz Premium users have the option to choose any number of cities to play the quiz with (stats are processed but score isn’t saved). Why small district such as Baleendah with population under 100.000 is in the top 100, but big regency such as Sidoarjo with population over 2.000.000 is not..?
Regencies are not counted as ‘cities’ in my quizzes…they span multiple cities.
In Indonesia, Regencies don’t span multiple city. Regencies (kabupaten) and cities (kota) are the second-level administrative subdivision below the provinces. The only difference is Kabupaten is headed by a regent (bupati) while Kota is headed by a Mayor (Walikota). So, Cities such as Jakarta or Surabaya and Regencies such as Sidoarjo or Gresik can be counted as cities
Meanwhile, district (kecamatan) can’t be counted as a city because district is the third-level administrative subdivision, below regency or city. and Baleendah is a district in the Bandung Regency
I don’t think any websites of largest cities in Indonesia count regencies as cities though, for example:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Indonesian_cities_by_population
and
https://www.citypopulation.de/en/indonesia/cities/
I typically go by what citypopulation counts as a ‘city’ which varies from country to country, but I don’t think any website would list a regency (that isn’t a city) as a ‘largest city’ in Indonesia.
maybe you can see here for additional info
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_regencies_and_cities_in_Indonesia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subdivisions_of_Indonesia
and, i’m still curious why Baleendah can be counted as cities? because Baleendah is a third-level district (kecamatan) in the Bandung Regency while Bandung is also counted as a city
also, Cilacap and Ciamis is counted as cities here while they are clearly regencies in indonesia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cilacap_Regency
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciamis_Regency
I guess I’m going by what the Indonesian census calls an ‘urban commune’ per citypopulation:
https://citypopulation.de/en/indonesia/
This is similar to what I do for Netherlands and South Africa when that’s how their census tabulates populations of urban areas.
