Australia Circle Radius Population Challenge

The object of this quiz is to adjust each circle's radius so it contains the target population shown at the right. When you click Start you will be shown a marker on a random Australia mesh block area (there are over 350K mesh blocks across Australia, the smallest census tabulation area). Also you will see an adjustable circle of radius 100 km to start. Adjust the circle's radius by dragging it until it contains the target number of people shown - this target will be between 25K and 5 million people. Then click submit. You are scored on how close your circle's population is to the target. Circle population is tallied by totaling all output areas within that circle.

Australia City Grid Blackout

Type 'easy' or 'hard' to begin the quiz. Easy is a 5-degree grid, hard is a 2.5-degree grid. Then, name any Australian city in each grid square which fits the category label for each square.

LETTER: means the city starts with that letter.
NUMBER RANGE: (such as 2-5, 10+) means the city contains that many letters (excluding spaces and special characters).
POPULATION RANGE: (such as 250-500K) means the city has that range for its population.
2+ WORDS means the city name has 2 or more words (words denoted by a space or hyphen).

At the end of the quiz the largest population missed answer will show in each square.

Hi, thank you for this quiz! Overall, I found it quite entertaining. However, I ran into complications figuring out some of the smaller towns that appear to be administrative districts or parts of larger entities and are thus a bit misleading—for instance, the suburban districts (Dumbea, Le Mont-Dore) around Noumea; the Blue Mountains towns (Katoomba, Leura, Wentworth Falls) near Sydney; the Hibiscus Coast (Silverdale, Orewa, Red Beach, Whangaparaoa) near Auckland; and Maunalua/Hawaii Kai/Koko Marina within Honolulu (I couldn’t figure that one out).
I think it would be perfect if the objects were consistent, or if at least the presence of other entities were somehow stated in the quiz description.

I think it depends how a census counts ‘cities’ – for Australia for example, I’m using ‘Urban Centres’ and ‘Localities’ from here:

Also that city on O’ahu. I tried everything, but it’s not working! It has 50,922 people.

When I go to that area on Maps, nothing pops up. Also, there is a very difficult city on New Caledonia. I tried Comm. du Mont-Dore, but that didn’t work.

I can’t figure out the second city in the Solomon Islands. I had to use Google Maps, but that didn’t help

Shouldn’t Guam and Northern Mariana Islands be included? The largest village in Guam has almost 45,000 people, which I think is enough to make the Top 250.

I’m using CDP’s for populations in Guam – Dededo is under 10K for its CDP population.

Near Auckland is one city (60.400 habitants). Must be Silverdale, but don’t work. And everything else what I try (red beach, whangaparaoa, etc.) don’t work either.

Since you’re including Hawaii in this quiz, shouldn’t the Indonesian half of New Guinea also be included?

I’ll see if I can but I don’t have population figures for Indonesia cities between 10-50k so that’s why I left it off.

I get the geographical logic, in the same way Cayenne is a South American city, Noumea is in Oceania, and both are in France. But it seems pretty conventional, and somewhat justifiable, to count Hawaii as part of North America.

Anyway great quiz and great site as always!

Yeah some sites do have it as part of Oceania and I’m going to stick with that.
