US 10K+ Cities 50 Mile Expanding Circles Distance Challenge – Choose City
DirectionsFirst choose any US 10K+ city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name any US 10K+ city in each 50 mile circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice – NOTE – you must enter a period ‘.’ at the end of the city to submit it. The first circle will include your city of choice as already guessed. The object in this quiz is to guess the city in the next ring which is as CLOSE TO THE PREVIOUS CITY as possible. The closest city will get you 100 points, the farthest away answer 0 points and cities in between will score based on how far away they were between the closest and farthest away cities in that ring.
When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring’s closest correct answer at right.
For example, if you choose ‘Chicago, IL’ – you will be shown a circle of radius 50 miles centered at Chicago and Chicago will be selected. You will also see a ring of radius 100 miles outside that circle. Naming a city in this ring will cause another ‘ring’ of radius 150 miles to appear outside that ring and you will get 0-100 points, depending how close to Chicago your city was. If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. So if a city doesn’t fall within 50-100 miles, it will expand to be a 50-150 mile ring, then 50-200 mile and so on until a qualifying city is found within the ring.

Quiz Takers
Same quiz as the previous but with 10K+ cities (not all cities) and a larger radius.
Nice quiz! Just one little issue — occasionally, when there are two cities of the same name, the quiz defaults to the furthest one for the answer (e.g. I was in Decatur, AL, so typed “Florence” for my next answer, since Florence, AL was in the next circle, however, my answer was logged as Florence, KY). This sort of thing happens on other quizzes too (especially proximity quizzes). Not sure what workarounds there may be, other than always requiring state abbreviations.
I do have it set to choose the closest city if there are matching names – perhaps Florence, AL wasn’t actually in the ring you were guessing?
