Directions

First choose a difficulty by typing ‘beg’, ‘int’, ‘adv, or ‘exp’ – Beginner is 5 degrees, Intermediate 2.5 degrees, Advanced 1 degrees, and Expert 0.5 degrees. A grid of your chosen square size will be placed randomly on the map. Then, enter the largest city in each grid square of the size based on your difficulty. Green squares contain answers. Adv and Exp levels may take a few moments to load.

Canada Grid Top 5 Challenge

Type 'easy' or 'hard' to begin the quiz. Easy is a 10-degree grid, hard is a 5-degree grid. Then, try to name the largest Canada cities in each square IN ORDER. North America 10K+ City Grid 3rd Largest City Challenge

Type 'easy' or 'hard' to begin the quiz. Easy is a 5-degree grid, hard is a 2.5-degree grid. Then, try to name the THIRD LARGEST 10K+ North American city in each grid square. To name a city, you must first click on the grid square to make it have a GREEN border. Then, type in the city answer for that square followed by a '.' (a period). You are given a score from 0 to 100 based on your answer's population compared to the 3nd largest city accepted in that square (100 being you named the 3nd largest city). If you guess the largest city it will be based on the ratio of the 3nd largest city's population to the largest.

At the end of the quiz the 3nd largest city will show in each unanswered square, and for those answered the 3nd largest city will be listed next to your score if you didn't answer it.

I think there should’ve been a minimum of 5k population for this quiz instead of All. Not only would it mitigate the Alaska chore (though I’m all for its inclusion) but also some squares cover such tiny pieces of land that we’re left with unguessable podunks.

darin, these are great. However, I have a bit of an issue including Alaska and Hawaii on these. In my view, limiting this to the contiguous 48 would be much better. There are so many tiny, unknown towns in Alaska (and Hawaii, to a lesser extent), I think US grid-square quizzes should just focus on the lower 48. Just my opinion, though – I’m not the one putting in the hard work to create these. Thanks!

Alaska was always a pain on both grid and coverage quizzes. You just gotta memorise 10/15 places there and use them whenever needed. Hawaii is doable though. I see your point but excluding any of them would make the quiz look incomplete.

Alaska needs to be covered simply because of the population of Anchorage, and the same goes for Hawaii with Honolulu.

This is the same argument I’ve tried using for Puerto Rico’s inclusion, since San Juan is one of the 50 largest cities in the US!

Thing is Puerto Rico is not part of the US… it’s an unincorporated territory. If included we would also have to include Guam, American Samoa and so on…
