World 50K+ Cities 10×10 Blackout

Directions

Fill in the 100 squares with World 50K+ cities based on the categories in the top row and the geographical location given in the cell. For example, if you are looking at a cell with ‘Asia’ in its row, and ‘2+ Words’ in the column, that cell can be filled in with ‘New Delhi.’

Occasionally a cell may not have a qualifying answer, in which case it will appear blank and be a gimme.

hugequiz Premium members will see missed answers in red – they will be the largest city which qualified in each cell.

Tromso doesnt work for some reason, despite being over 50k and above both latitudes, with 6 letters in the name

Really love this quiz! If I could suggest one thing it’d be more country variation – after replaying some times it starts becoming slightly repetitive. There are a lot of European countries in there and I think it would be cool with more from other continents. From Africa I’ve only seen SA and (I think?) Morocco, what about Nigeria, Ethiopia, DRC, Angola, Egypt, Tanzania etc? Or from other continents maybe Peru, Colombia, Pakistan, Iran, Philippines, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia?

Why isn’t Bastia accepted for France ending with an ‘A’? And what’s the answer too? I can’t think of anywhere else French that fits.

For the love of everything that is holy, I can not find any city in Argentina that has 50+ population and starts with an H…

The definition of a city is different across the world. Metro, locality, local government area, etc. That means the quizmaster should be selective in the questions, so that there really is only one answer, not multiple possible answers.

Is Gitega (the newish capital of Burundi) still under its old name of Kitega? Regardless, it isn’t accepted as an answer for Africa that starts with G. The population is 135k, so it should be there.

I see that Bujumbura (old capital, but still the “economic capital”), Kitega (new capital, old name), nor Gitega (new capital, new name) is accepted for Africa -> World Capital. I don’t know what the data has as the capital of Burundi.

Thanks for the response. That site is using 2008 data, which would explain things. Wikipedia’s page for Gitega uses a 2020 number from a Burundi website.

As Gitega was only named capital in 2019 with a 3-year window to move, it makes sense that it has a much bigger population now than in 2008.

Maybe you indicated your source for the data elsewhere, but I didn’t see it. That’s useful to know. Anyway, I now have greatly increased my Burundi knowledge…on a percentage basis. George, South Africa handles anything that Gitega would have covered.

p.s. One feature that would be useful is to add a column to the left after the quiz is done to indicate what the category of each row was.

When describing the game on Facebook, I accidentally referred to a row as Australia when it was Oceania…the one difference being I used Suva, Fiji in it. I also couldn’t remember if it was South of 20° or South of 30° for one of the rows.

Why is harare not an answer for city that starts with H under -30 latitude?

TristanWhite

Why is Haridwar not acceptable as an Indian city starting with H? And why is Dover not acceptable as a UK city between 2-5 letters?

hey, great quiz, very creative idea and I love that it’s always different. But I was surprised that ‘Ponta Delgada’ isn’t accepted as 2+ words for Portugal, is there a reason for it?

Really great quiz, but the screen won’t scroll sideways. If I’m the only one getting that don’t worry about it

Why is Johannesburg not an acceptable answer for 1m+ city in South Africa? It shows Soweto, which is a suburb of Johannesburg, as the highest population city in South Africa. I can’t find any categorization on the “List of Municipalities in South Africa” wikipedia page that supports this.

Thanks for the quick reply. Soweto is listed as a “Main Place” within the City of Johannesburg, which is listed at all levels as a city and municipality unto itself. Soweto is a subunit of the City of Johannesburg and does not have independent governance. This decision also flouts convention. I feel it’s one thing to use official city populations instead of metropolitan populations (like Jetpunk does); that’s a totally valid choice. I don’t feel the same about subdividing beyond the level of what is already technically designated as a city and as a municipality, especially when doing so contradicts convention and common understanding.

This is just my two cents and constructive criticism. I found this website this week and it has some of the best geography quizzes I’ve ever done, enough to make me upgrade to premium which I never did on Sporcle or Jetpunk. Cheers

Fair enough – it’ll just be a quirk to get used to! Thanks for the explanation
