It is a LEMMA word list – meaning different forms of a verb are combined and counted together – i.e. “ate” is under “eat.” The COCA corpus is based on words taken from various mediums from 1990-2012, so it is quite recent in its focus. Verbs include all types of verbs, i.e. modal, auxiliary, etc.
