First choose a difficulty by typing ‘beg’, ‘int’, ‘adv, or ‘exp’ – Beginner is 5 degrees, Intermediate 2.5 degrees, Advanced 1 degrees, and Expert 0.5 degrees. Then, enter the largest Australian city in each grid square of the size based on your difficulty. Green squares contain answers.

Australia Circle Radius Population Challenge

The object of this quiz is to adjust each circle's radius so it contains the target population shown at the right. When you click Start you will be shown a marker on a random Australia mesh block area (there are over 350K mesh blocks across Australia, the smallest census tabulation area). Also you will see an adjustable circle of radius 100 km to start. Adjust the circle's radius by dragging it until it contains the target number of people shown - this target will be between 25K and 5 million people. Then click submit. You are scored on how close your circle's population is to the target. Circle population is tallied by totaling all output areas within that circle.

Type 'easy' or 'hard' to begin the quiz. Easy is a 5-degree grid, hard is a 2.5-degree grid. Then, name any Australian city in each grid square which fits the category label for each square.

LETTER: means the city starts with that letter.
NUMBER RANGE: (such as 2-5, 10+) means the city contains that many letters (excluding spaces and special characters).
POPULATION RANGE: (such as 250-500K) means the city has that range for its population.
2+ WORDS means the city name has 2 or more words (words denoted by a space or hyphen).

At the end of the quiz the largest population missed answer will show in each square.

You'll get a score from 0 to 100 based on how accurate your guess was. Complete 20 random cities from among the 100 largest Australian cities to end the quiz.

I love these grid ones. I do reach a point though that I have only tiny places, sub 1000 population villages, remaining and I lose my motivation to keep learning them. Any chance of adding a 0.25 super expert stage or something with a better name? 🙂

Is there a population limit or another criteria for this map? I noticed the Eucla square is empty so there should be some sort of criteria.

The data is per the Australian census here:
https://citypopulation.de/en/australia/

I don’t think Eucla is counted for some reason, maybe it’s just referred to as a village or something.
