Canada Cities Grid Identifier Challenge

The object of this quiz is to double-click the grid square where cities are located (the centroid of the city is used). When you begin you will have a grid randomly placed with size 5 degrees latitude by 5 degrees longitude. You will be told which city to locate - simply double-click on that city's grid square and you will move on to the next city. Each time you go to a new city the squares are randomly redrawn and with a size 10% smaller. The first 10 cities will be 250K+, the next 10 100-250K, next 10 50-100K and the balance (until you run out of time or guess wrong) will be 25-50K. When you guess wrong the correct location will be shown as a pink marker.

You do get a break if you are within 2 km of the city but in the wrong square – you will not get credit for the guess but will get another chance at that level.

Canada Grid Head To Head City Capture

This quiz is only available in Head-To-Head mode.

First, choose a difficulty by typing ‘beg’, ‘int’, ‘adv, or ‘exp’ – Beginner is 10 degrees, Intermediate 5 degrees, Advanced 2.5 degrees, and Expert 1 degree. Then, take turns entering the largest Canadian city in each grid square of the size based on your difficulty. Green squares contain answers. There will be a white (Player 1) and a black (Player 2) competitor - when you answer a square it will fill in with your color.

When you have a square with your color surrounded in all directions (north, south, east, west - whichever are available) by other squares also of your color, it becomes 'captured' and the city in that surrounded square has its population added to your score.

The player with the highest score at the end of the quiz wins.

So for example in this World quiz, Black has scored on Chicago (circled) and Anchorage, and white has scored on Madrid (circled) and Reykjavik.

Canada Grid Path Challenge – All Cities

Choose a level by typing ‘beg’, ‘int’, ‘adv’, or ‘exp’ – beg level is 5 degree squares, int 2.5 degrees, adv 1 degree, and exp 0.5 degrees. Then, name any Canada city to start with by entering it (cities with the same name will choose the largest city of that name first). The grid square you are starting in will turn yellow - you now must name any city in any one of the adjacent grid squares (not including diagonal) - so any grid square directly north, south, east or west of the yellow one. Naming a city in one of these squares will turn your original square red and the current newly named city square yellow - continue in the same way trying to make a path of as many squares as you can. You are not allowed to return to a red square, and if you get 'boxed in' with no squares left to complete the quiz will also end.

Be aware that as you name cities it will answer the largest city first, so if you are trying to answer a city in a square to the east but a larger city of that name occurs a square to the north, the north one will be answered.

Obviously, due to the layout and separation of squares it will be impossible to complete all of them.

Canada Grid Population Challenge

First choose a grid size by typing '10', '5' or '2.5'. A grid of that size lat/long will be placed on the map (so if you choose '10' the grid width and height will be 10 degrees). Then, double click on the grid square with the highest population within it (based on Canada Dissemination Area information - the smallest population block their census uses). The highest-population remaining square will give you 100 points, all the way down to 0 for the one with the smallest population. Canada Grid Top 5 Challenge

Type 'easy' or 'hard' to begin the quiz. Easy is a 10-degree grid, hard is a 5-degree grid. Then, try to name the largest Canada cities in each square IN ORDER. To name a city, you must first click on the grid square to make it have a GREEN border. Then, type in the city answer for that square followed by a '.' (a period).

The squares will start with '0/5' (or maybe fewer cities if less exist in that square). Click on a square and enter the largest city in that square not yet answered (so, the largest city if you have yet to answer a city in that square). You will then have '1/5' and need to click on that square to name the 2nd largest city, and so on until you complete all the cities up to 5 (or less if less exist). If you name an incorrect city in a square it becomes 'locked' and turns red and you can no longer accumulate cities in that square.
