First choose the number of agglos by typing ‘100’, ‘250’, ‘500’, ‘1k’ or ‘all’ – then try to achieve the highest population among the top French urban agglomerations (unités urbaines) you chose. Metropolitan France only – no overseas regions. Quiz is not timed.

UK Circle Radius Population Challenge

The object of this quiz is to adjust each circle's radius so it contains the target population shown at the right. When you click Start you will be shown a marker on a random UK output area (there are over 200K output areas - also called Data Zones in Scotland and N Ireland - across the UK, the smallest census tabulation area). Also you will see an adjustable circle of radius 100 km to start. Adjust the circle's radius by dragging it until it contains the target number of people shown - this target will be between 25K and 5 million people. Then click submit. You are scored on how close your circle's population is to the target. Circle population is tallied by totaling all output areas within that circle.

NOTE - This quiz does NOT include any people in Ireland or other countries outside the UK, you are only trying to total the target number of people within the UK.

I don’t quite understand the logic behind what counts as an agglomeration… for example why aren’t Melun and Mantes-la-Jolie counted as such? but Épône and Aubergenville that are smaller and closer to Paris are

Yeah those first two are considered part of the Paris urban agglo. Definition is here: https://www.insee.fr/fr/metadonnees/definition/c1501
