Begin by entering a state abbreviation (i.e. ‘CA’) to choose your state. The object of the quiz is to double-click on the cities in order from easternmost to westernmost within that state. Largest population states have a minimum city population of 25K, 10K for states with less large cities, then 5K and finally 1K for states with the fewest cities.

Double-click on a city’s text and it will be selected and you will get a score. 100 points corresponds to the easternmost city, 0 points to the farthest west – score decreases based on how eastern your selected city is in relation to all of the remaining cities.

US City Grid Blackout Largest City Challenge

Type 'easy' or 'hard' to begin the quiz. Easy is a 5-degree grid, hard is a 2.5-degree grid. Then, try to name the LARGEST city in each grid square which fits the category label for each square. To name a city, you must first click on the grid square to make it have a GREEN border. Then, type in the city answer for that square followed by a '.' (a period). You are given a score from 0 to 100 based on your answer's population compared to the largest city accepted in that square (100 being you named the largest city).

LETTER: means the city starts with that letter.
NUMBER RANGE: (such as 2-5, 10+) means the city contains that many letters (excluding spaces and special characters).
POPULATION RANGE: (such as 50-100K) means the city has that range for its population.

US Circle Population Selection Challenge

The object of this quiz is to click on the circle containing the largest population. When you begin you'll be shown 2 circles on the map with radii between 10 and 250 miles which do not intersect. Click on the one with the larger population within it (based on US census tract info) then 'Submit' - if you are correct you'll move on. One incorrect round and the quiz is over. Every 5 rounds the number of circles on the map will increase by 1. Try to build the longest streak of correct circles. Circles displayed will always be non-intersecting.

NOTE: You may have to zoom out to see all circles, occasionally a AK/HI circle will be included. Also, only population within the US is included in the total, any Canada/Mexico coverage counts as 0 population within the circle.

Canada Circle Radius Population Challenge

The object of this quiz is to adjust each circle's radius so it contains the target population shown at the right. When you click Start you will be shown a marker on a random Canada dissemination area (there are over 55K dissemination areas across Canada, the smallest census tabulation area). Also you will see an adjustable circle of radius 100 km to start. Adjust the circle's radius by dragging it until it contains the target number of people shown - this target will be between 10K and 5 million people. Then click submit. You are scored on how close your circle's population is to the target. Circle population is tallied by totaling all output areas within that circle.
