US Grid Population Challenge

Directions

First choose a grid size by typing ’10’, ‘5’ or ‘2.5’. A grid of that size lat/long will be placed on the map (so if you choose ’10’ the grid width and height will be 10 degrees). Then, double click on the grid square with the highest population within it (based on US census tract information). The highest-population remaining square will give you 100 points, all the way down to 0 for the one with the smallest population. Try to obtain the most points by successively double-clicking on the highest-populated grid square.

US City Random Grid 2nd Largest City Challenge

Type 'easy' or 'hard' to begin the quiz. Easy is a 5-degree grid, hard is a 2.5-degree grid. A grid will be placed randomly on the map. Then, try to name the SECOND LARGEST city in each grid square. To name a city, you must first click on the grid square to make it have a GREEN border. Then, type in the city answer for that square followed by a '.' (a period). You are given a score from 0 to 100 based on your answer's population compared to the 2nd largest city accepted in that square (100 being you named the 2nd largest city). If you guess the largest city it will be based on the ratio of the 2nd largest city's population to the largest.

AK and HI are NOT included in this quiz as they often have grid squares with only one answer for this quiz.

At the end of the quiz the 2nd largest city will show in each unanswered square, and for those answered the 2nd largest city will be listed next to your score if you didn't answer it.

US Largest Cities – Choose Minimum Population

First enter the minimum population for all cities to guess followed by a period - for example '50000.' for 50K+ cities or '2500.' for 2500+ cities. Maximum population 1 million, minimum 100. Quiz is not timed. Then, name all the US cities with that minimum population trying to achieve the highest number.

Every different minimum population will have a separate leaderboard.

Canada Grid Top 5 Challenge

Type 'easy' or 'hard' to begin the quiz. Easy is a 10-degree grid, hard is a 5-degree grid. Then, try to name the largest Canada cities in each square IN ORDER. To name a city, you must first click on the grid square to make it have a GREEN border. Then, type in the city answer for that square followed by a '.' (a period).

The squares will start with '0/5' (or maybe fewer cities if less exist in that square). Click on a square and enter the largest city in that square not yet answered (so, the largest city if you have yet to answer a city in that square). You will then have '1/5' and need to click on that square to name the 2nd largest city, and so on until you complete all the cities up to 5 (or less if less exist). If you name an incorrect city in a square it becomes 'locked' and turns red and you can no longer accumulate cities in that square.

You receive 1 point for the largest city in a square, 2 for the 2nd largest, and so on.

At the end of the quiz the largest remaining city you haven't named will be shown in each square.
