Canada 100 Cities Locator
DirectionsDouble-click on the location of each of the 100 largest Canadian cities, eh. The closer you click, the more points you get (max 100), eh. Not all points will be right in the heart of the city as they are the geographical centers of the city’s large area.
Note: There are two North Vancouver cities. I will display the population for each one when it comes up…the larger one is about 90K, the smaller about 60K.

Albertan here, just wanted to say Wood Buffalo and Strathcona County are not cities and are rural municipalities

Also “St. John’s” Newfoundland is listed correctly but Saint John NB is listed as St. John which is a big faux pas in the Maritimes. The New Brunswick city the word Saint is always spelt out in full and never abbreviated so as to better make the distinction between it and the capital of NFLD.
Cape Breton as it is listed is technically a regional municipality but should be listed as Sydney NS. Cape Breton Municipality is the greater Sydney area, but the only way people use the name Cape Breton is then they mean to encompass the whole island. The city is Sydney NS.
Terrible, I picked smack dab in the middle of both Pickering and Halifax and it says I’m over 100 km off… wtf?

Two things.
1 – North Vancouver is on here twice, and marked in two different spots. So its impossible to know which one you are getting first.
2 – I’m new here, so it might be a dumb question. But is there a way to click in the general area that a pin already contains? If you try to click from too far out, it wont let you click on a spot thats generally close to one you already clicked on… and you have to waste time scrolling in to find a spot slightly off the last spot. Really is an issue in Southern ON, Montreal, & Vancouver areas.
you can zoom in/out to more accurately place your pin. I’ll add a note in directions about the North Vancouver issue.
Yeah, I’m aware I can zoom in…. which is the problem. To accurately place a pin in the general area, you have to zoom in to those areas. Then zoom back out for the next one. For example. Its round 80, I know where Brampton is, and am completely fine taking a 94 instead of a 100 on it by just space plonking in the general GTA area. But I cant, because I have to zoom in, wasting 2-3 seconds zooming in, then 2-3 zooming out, to find a free space in the area, because when I tried to click there, it wouldnt accept it, because it is trying to place the pin in an “area” the game has given to a previous pin. So you try to inch it over 1 pixel, but then you bump into another pin.
Now all the way zoomed in, yeah, they are kilometres apart, but at full map distance, it acts like they are all marked on the same street corner practically. I should be able to just mass plonk in the same spot from a distance, and not waste 3ish seconds each time zooming in, then out. To place 1 marker in a crowded area.
I am sure its probably a flaw in the games code when they made it that never considered this play style that it cant allow it or something. I am just saying, it SHOULD be that way.
As for the North Van issue, you could change the name of the northern one to “District of North Vancouver” as thats how most people here tell the two apart when they are trying to differentiate them.
Ah I see what you mean. It might be a Google Maps issue I can’t get around but I will check. I’ll change the North Vancouver name for the more northern one.
I’m guessing from the previous people that there used to be a timer, but mine is broken rn, not sure if it’s just my computer?

I think there should be a game note added that the quiz is asking for the geographical centre of the city, not the population centre of the city. Some large cities like Hamilton, Halifax, Cape Breton, and Wood Buffalo, for example, have the markers quite far from where the city core is.

I take it from other comments that this quiz once had a zoom feature. It’s extremely frustrating without one.
i’ve added the zoom – I think i accidentally removed it a while ago.
Is there no more zoom? Southern Ontario got so crowded I couldn’t find a place to click. Which actually kinda reflects what it’s like to live here.
My hometown is St John’s, so when that came up I was excited to drag the map eastward and place it exactly where it should be. But the click to pan the map counted as the click to guess, so I was off by thousands of km on my own hometown. Augh! 🙁

Fixed the scoring so it goes to 100 – did on the other recent location quizzes too. As for the scoring – the quiz actually IS timed, I removed the note saying it wasn’t. Your 10 min probably expired.
No, I know the quiz was timed, but it saved my score after 24 or 25 answers. I didn’t time out until 66 answers (mainly because I didn’t realize it was timed and I was busy typing my first comment), at which point I had around 5,000 points instead of the 1,740 currently listed. Thanks for fixing the scoring though 🙂
I’m glad to have a Canadian version of this, and the ability to zoom is great, but I’m confused about the scoring. For example, on one city I was only 0.3 km off, but that only equalled 78/100 points. I’ve noticed it on a couple of the other locator quizzes that I’ve done so far (France, Africa, USA by state). Also, it saved my score to the high scores about 1/4 of the way through, but didn’t save the final score when the time ran out.
Me too, I had 7472 points at the end of it. Fun quiz though.
