World 50K+ City Coverage

Directions

First choose a difficulty by typing ‘beg’, ‘int’, ‘adv, or ‘exp’ – Beginner is 1000km radius, Intermediate 500km, Advanced 250km, and Expert 100km. Then, enter 50K+ population cities and all 50K+ population cities within that radius will automatically fill in. When you have at least 160 countries, the countries remaining will be shown.

hugequiz Premium members will see the 25 largest missed cities at the end of the quiz as large, purple markers.

NEW: Premium members can now also play a 3-hour time limit ‘custom’ coverage quiz of any distance from 50km to 2500km, simply enter the distance followed by a ‘.’ instead of choosing from one of the four levels, i.e. ‘1500.’ Quiz score is not recorded for the custom coverage option.

Try a different geography:
Africa Coverage | Asia Coverage | Europe 10K+ City Coverage
North America 10K+ City Coverage | South America Coverage | US 1K+ City Coverage
Enter level to begin ('beg', 'int', 'adv', or 'exp').

I wonder which city (in beginner mode) unlocks the most other cities on a blank map. So far the highest I’ve found was Bhopal for +873 (without duplicates) and Santa Cruz at +966 (with duplicates) – although you could technically argue the map is no longer empty then thanks to San.

Potamophile

I like when you have duplicate city names that cover large swaths all by themselves, like Springfield or San Jose. Bonus for the latter because it also gives you San and Sanjo along the way.

Japan doesn’t seem to be able to be completed on Adv, is there some obscure city I’m missing? I’ve gotten Naha on Okinawa so that’s not it.

Out of curiosity, how are you using citypopulation.de – are you only allowing official census numbers (even if they are very old) or also estimates? I happened to look at the page for Central African Republic today and it seems like the cities and numbers listed in the quiz are based on the last census, which was from 2003. According to the estimate from 2021 there are now 10 cities with over 50K.

Any chance of fixing the issue with all times past 1 hour registering as 0m 0s for advanced and expert? 🙂

andrea

It looks like the “Data Updated” is incorrect – it still says 10/11/2021 even though the total number of cities just changed.

Also, why doesn’t Tidore, West Papua, Indonesia work? It does in other quizzes that are less up-to-date than this one. Surely they haven’t lost 50k people in a few years?

The marker for Hulunbuir in northern China appears to be quite off

Bladselleri

Reply to  darin

Yeah, it’s a bit tricky sometimes with cities vs. prefectures in China, since many prefectures are named after cities and it is not so clear if the name refers to the city or the prefecture. The large area for Hulunbuir is the entire prefecture, and it would be a bit peculiar to count all that as the city. To my knowledge you don’t do that with other Chinese prefectures (practically all larger Chinese cities in the quiz have a prefecture as well but are still placed at their city centers), and other cities within Hulunbuir prefecture also appear on the quiz.
Now, I don’t have intimate knowledge of Hulunbuir specifically, and some sources list the city name as Hailar instead of Hulunbuir. You might even want to accept both (I have only ever heard of Hulunbuir, and it does come up as “prefecture level city” when I google it). Either way the city itself is quite clearly located to the west of Yakeshi and not to the east as it is currently.

Anyway, thank you, and thanks for your great work on these quizzes – truly amazing and enjoyable to play!

I’ve been wondering for a while, why do we have two Dohas and two Kuwait Cities?
Also, there seems to be some kind of bug with the scoring at advanced and expert, for most scores except a few it says 0 minutes 0 seconds.

Really having a fun time speedrunning this. Helps that cities like “St Louis” or “San Juan” have significant transcontinental coverage!

Why is Muscat not there, if going of urban area that is almost at a million

candaroglu

Reply to  darin

As a former Muscat resident, I’ll try to explain this. On Citypopulation, the site lists “As-Sib” as being the largest city in Oman. I lived in As-Sib. Technically. It’s a neighborhood. 400,000 people may seem large for a neighborhood, but that’s what it is. I’ve heard of Matrah (it’s Mutrah), one of the other districts. That’s where the Old City is located-the only reason people might use the word Mutrah is discussing tourism. Honestly, Bawshar, the other one, I don’t even know that. If you said you lived in Bawshar, I’d ask where that was. They’re all Muscat. People also know Ruwi-this is a commercial area where you will only see people of South Asian descent. I remember once asking for my address and realizing I immediately made a mistake-the poor secretary started writing six lines:

Area (Al Hail South for me)
Building No.: xxxx
Way No.: xxxx
Street No.: xxxx (the same number as the way number!)
Block No.: xxx
Plot No: x/xxx

I can’t think of another example in any capital city like Muscat. I’ve lived in Kharkiv, Aden, Dushanbe, Sana’a, Ankara, Istanbul, Sousse, Damascus, and Buenos Aires and while I can tell you the districts I lived in, it’s not like “Baghdad Street” is a valid answer for the capital of Syria.

Another quick useless fact. I should correct myself. I lived in Seeb (spelled that way in English). Except for citypopulation, I have never seen “Sib” written and I have never heard a person use the definite article (al, as in this case) to describe it.

Did a new city get added to Saudi Arabia? On the intermediate level, I don’t remember having to type Riyadh to complete the country. Putting in Doha, Sanaa, Mecca, Hail, Abha, Basra, Tikrit, & Salt seemed to cover it before. But now I have to type in Riyadh to cover the country. Or did one of the cities I listed get slightly moved away from the center of the country?

What is the city in northeast Alberta? It’s obviously Fort McMurray, but that isn’t an accepted answer. Is it in the list under another name?

4xion

Reply to  darin

This isn’t quite right, Wood Buffalo is the extremely large regional municipality (over 60000 sq km according to Statistics Canada), and Fort McMurray is the local population center (how StatCan classifies towns, cities, etc) with population 68002 according to the Canadian 2021 census

4xion

Interesting, this one seems to have it correct: https://citypopulation.de/en/canada/cities/
with no Wood Buffalo listed. Similarly, https://citypopulation.de/en/canada/alberta/_/UA0292__wood_buffalo_fort_mcmurra/
also Statistics Canada has Fort McMurray as the population center and Wood Buffalo as the large region

Cape Breton, Canada doesn’t seem to be a valid answer, but it shows up on other quizes as a 50k+ city. According to this http://www.citypopulation.de/en/canada/cities/novascotia/?cityid=2799, it has a population of 94007.

BaronessSandra

But the world cities random grid quiz does not use urban area. I had Cape Breton as an answer there multiple times. Its also an answer in North America city grid and Canada city grid and its given population there is about 90k.

Sānménxiá (Henen, China) is a bit off, too, lies in Shanxi. Also, as BaronBones remarked below, Pematangsiantar in Indonesia is placed on the wrong island. Maybe you could correct this, too.
Might I ask what source you used for the cities in Myanmar (name, population); I can’t recognise your selection on citypop? Thanks a lot!

On Australia city grid for example Shepparton has a 50-75k pin though.

BaronessSandra

Also, Pematangsiantar in Indonesia seems to have the wrong coordinates: it’s supposed to be in North Sumatra, but it shows up on Central Java. Seems to be in the wrong spot on random grid world as well (had a tile that had to be Pematangsiantar according to citypopulation.de, but instead the answer was Tebbingtinggi).

Finally a 100% on intermediate. What a tough but fun quiz. How people are able to figure out the least amount of cities to be the most efficient, I’m not sure how they are able to do it so well. I’ll have to redo intermediate a few more times before I dare try advanced.
