US Closest Capital Challenge

First type ‘start’ to begin. Then you will be given a US state capital. Try to name the closest other state capital to the given capital. Only the 5 closest capitals will be accepted as an answer. You can type ‘next’ to skip the current capital. Getting the closest capital will yield 100 points. 2nd thru 5th closest will give a lower point total, based both on the rank of the capital (2nd thru 5th, minus 10 points for each ranking below first) and how much farther the guessed capital is away than the closest capital. 10 total capitals and 3 minutes total time, 20 seconds maximum per capital.

US State Capital Pairs Proximity Blackout

Upon clicking START you will be presented with a 5×5 table of US state capitals. The object of the quiz is to pair up capitals two at a time which have the shortest distance between them.

Single click on a capital's text and it will highlight red. To choose the other capital of the pair click another capital's text. Also, you can re-click on the first capital to deselect it. The distance between them will be shown and you will get up to 100 points. 100 points corresponds to the closest pair of capitals, 0 points to the farthest apart pair – scores decrease based on the distance of your two capitals related to the possible range of distances. Those two capitals will then be replaced with their score and you will now choose the closest pair of capitals from the remaining 23 capitals which have been adjusted to have 100 and 0 corresponding to the closest/farthest pairs among those 23, and so on until you run out of time or complete 12 pairs of capitals leaving one left.

You get a 100 point bonus for completing all 12 pairs within 5 minutes, making for a total possible point total of 2500.

US State Capitals Triplets Blackout Challenge

Upon clicking START you will be presented with a 5×5 grid of 25 of the US state capitals.

The object of this quiz is to choose the top 3 in the given category for the capitals shown in the grid. When you begin you’ll be given 25 different capitals plus a category to name the top 3 in, which will display just above the grid. For example, if the category says ‘Top 3 Largest Population’ you are to click on the 3 capitals with the largest population. If it says ‘Top 3 Highest Elevation’ you are to click on the 3 whose elevation is the highest. You can deselect the first or second capital you chose on by re-clicking it, but when you choose the 3rd capital they will be submitted, removed from the grid, and you will get a score from 0-100 based on how close your set of 3 comes to the optimum set of 3 (which will be shown as a ‘Rank’ on top out of the # of possible sets of 3 for the last choice). When you’ve answered all 8 sets of 3 leaving only 1 capital the quiz is over. You get a 100 points bonus for completing the sets making for a total possible score of 2500.

Note: For the 'Most Recent' and 'Earliest' category, this is referencing the year the city became the capital of the state, not when the capital was founded/established or when the state became a state.
