Fill in the 25 squares with World 50K+ cities based on the categories in the top row and the geographical location given in the cell. For example, if you are looking at a cell with ‘Europe’ in its row, and ‘2+ Words’ in the column, that cell can be filled in with ‘The Hague.’

Occasionally a cell may not have a qualifying answer, in which case it will appear blank and be a gimme.

For the ‘capital city’ column use the administrative capital if the country has multiple capitals.

World City Grid Blackout Largest City Challenge

Type 'easy' or 'hard' to begin the quiz. Easy is a 15-degree grid, hard is a 10-degree grid. Then, try to name the LARGEST city in each grid square which fits the category label for each square. To name a city, you must first click on the grid square to make it have a GREEN border. Then, type in the city answer for that square followed by a '.' (a period). You are given a score from 0 to 100 based on your answer's population compared to the largest city accepted in that square (100 being you named the largest city).

LETTER: means the city starts with that letter.
NUMBER RANGE: (such as 2-5, 10+) means the city contains that many letters (excluding spaces and special characters).
POPULATION RANGE: (such as 50-100K) means the city has that range for its population.
2+ WORDS means the city name has 2 or more words (words denoted by a space or hyphen).

At the end of the quiz the largest population missed answer will show in each unanswered square, and for those answered the largest city will be listed if you didn't answer it.

World Circle Population Selection Challenge

The object of this quiz is to click on the circle containing the largest population. When you begin you'll be shown 2 circles with radii between 100 and 2500 km on the map which do not intersect. Click on the one with the larger population within it (based world population density info) then 'Submit' - if you are correct you'll move on. One incorrect round and the quiz is over. Every 5 rounds the number of circles on the map will increase by 1. Try to build the longest streak of correct circles. Circles displayed will always be non-intersecting.

World Grid Population Challenge

First choose a grid size by typing '30', '20', or '10'. A grid of that size lat/long will be placed on the map (so if you choose '20' the grid width and height will be 20 degrees). Then, double click on the grid square with the highest population within it (based on world 10km x 10km population density estimates). The highest-population remaining square will give you 100 points, all the way down to 0 for the one with the smallest population. Try to obtain the most points by successively double-clicking on the highest-populated grid square.

Los Angeles was valid with 100-250K population for “south of -20 latitude”, but not for “USA”

Vasco da Gama is not listed as a 2+ word city in India. It is, it’s the largest city in Goa, 100,000 people.

Hmm – I’ve been to Vasco da Gama and I would disagree. Wikipedia has them both down as different cities too. Vasco da Gama is actually the capital city of Goa. However, it’s your game so up to you 🙂 (and it’s a fantastic game, no complaints – just suggestions!)

yeah i stick to my source for counting and naming populations as they go by the censuses – Wikipedia is not a good source in general. otherwise I have to compare numbers and results from different sources which doesn’t work well 🙂

Shouldn’t technically all three capital cities work for South Africa (ie Bloemfontein and Cape Town *as well as* Pretoria)?

for my capital cities quizzes I just use administrative for capitals, so wanted to keep it consistent for this one as well.
