The AP is a joke!
They forgot Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty!
Well, having Fangio and Andretti as the pinnacle of auto-racing is also a bit off… fine drivers on their own right but regarding Formula 1 at the very least Schumacher and Senna should be ahead… even though many of the German feats were acheived in the 21st century. Then again I’m not sure motorsports racers should qualify as “athletes”. But that’s fine, it’s just a list for entertaining purposes.
This list is a joke for a non American, in every other country of the world Babe Ruth would not be in the first 1.000!
What about Canada or Japan, where baseball is very popular?
In fact, The Bambino would most likely be #3 in Canada (only behind Wayne Gretzky and Bret “The Hit Man” Hart)!
You’re right, but this is supposed to be a world list, if it was an american list, i’ll be ok. In quite every country of the world, baseball and hockey in particular are not popular at all.
This list is very US-centric sure… The fact there’s only 1 football (soccer) player in there says it all. Baseball relevance outside the US and one or two more countries is negligible.
Countries outside of the US are negligible. The Associated Press is American.
Also, baseball is extremely popular in Japan and in Latin America, and has good representation in South and Central America. The US + Japan > the entire rest of the world combined.
