World 50K+ City Coverage
DirectionsFirst choose a difficulty by typing ‘beg’, ‘int’, ‘adv, or ‘exp’ – Beginner is 1000km radius, Intermediate 500km, Advanced 250km, and Expert 100km. Then, enter 50K+ population cities and all 50K+ population cities within that radius will automatically fill in. When you have at least 160 countries, the countries remaining will be shown.
hugequiz Premium members will see the 25 largest missed cities at the end of the quiz as large, purple markers.
NEW: Premium members can now also play a 3-hour time limit ‘custom’ coverage quiz of any distance from 50km to 2500km, simply enter the distance followed by a ‘.’ instead of choosing from one of the four levels, i.e. ‘1500.’ Quiz score is not recorded for the custom coverage option.
For those that normally play in expert mode: doing beginner without looking (putting the screen on greenland) is quite fun.
I wonder which city (in beginner mode) unlocks the most other cities on a blank map. So far the highest I’ve found was Bhopal for +873 (without duplicates) and Santa Cruz at +966 (with duplicates) – although you could technically argue the map is no longer empty then thanks to San.
Hyderabad gives 967 with dupicate
I like when you have duplicate city names that cover large swaths all by themselves, like Springfield or San Jose. Bonus for the latter because it also gives you San and Sanjo along the way.
I was surpised by how many Halifax got me.
Same thing for Sur / Surat / Surat Thani
Others two cities for one like Os / Oslo, Moga / Mogadishu, Ye / Yekaterinburg, Pontian / Pontianak, Djibou / Djibouti, Kyzyl / Kyzylorda, St-John / St-John’s, etc.
Forgot about Moro / Moron / Moroni too
Japan doesn’t seem to be able to be completed on Adv, is there some obscure city I’m missing? I’ve gotten Naha on Okinawa so that’s not it.
was Miyakojima smh forgot that it existed
just got 4th place on beginner! great quiz my friend, cheers
i’m coming for you
already beat him
It scared tf out of me when I completed Kazakhstan with the sound on
Out of curiosity, how are you using citypopulation.de – are you only allowing official census numbers (even if they are very old) or also estimates? I happened to look at the page for Central African Republic today and it seems like the cities and numbers listed in the quiz are based on the last census, which was from 2003. According to the estimate from 2021 there are now 10 cities with over 50K.
Ah I must’ve missed adding those 2021 estimates for CAR – I will do so now.
Any chance of fixing the issue with all times past 1 hour registering as 0m 0s for advanced and expert? 🙂
It’s a known issue 🙂
It looks like the “Data Updated” is incorrect – it still says 10/11/2021 even though the total number of cities just changed.
This quiz is actually basically live – I update world cities and such on a daily basis these days 🙂
Also, why doesn’t Tidore, West Papua, Indonesia work? It does in other quizzes that are less up-to-date than this one. Surely they haven’t lost 50k people in a few years?
What’s the other quiz it’s accepted in? It’s under 50K…
https://citypopulation.de/en/indonesia/malukuutara/reg/admin/maluku_utara/8272__tidore/
It’s accepted in the World 500 Km Coverage Challenge, just tried it again and it worked.
The marker for Hulunbuir in northern China appears to be quite off
Hulunbuir is actually a very large area and the marker is at the centroid.
Yeah, it’s a bit tricky sometimes with cities vs. prefectures in China, since many prefectures are named after cities and it is not so clear if the name refers to the city or the prefecture. The large area for Hulunbuir is the entire prefecture, and it would be a bit peculiar to count all that as the city. To my knowledge you don’t do that with other Chinese prefectures (practically all larger Chinese cities in the quiz have a prefecture as well but are still placed at their city centers), and other cities within Hulunbuir prefecture also appear on the quiz.
Now, I don’t have intimate knowledge of Hulunbuir specifically, and some sources list the city name as Hailar instead of Hulunbuir. You might even want to accept both (I have only ever heard of Hulunbuir, and it does come up as “prefecture level city” when I google it). Either way the city itself is quite clearly located to the west of Yakeshi and not to the east as it is currently.
Yeah I’ll move it – although citypopulation.de does have the city’s page with that coordinate.
Weird, doesn’t seem that consistent from them.
Anyway, thank you, and thanks for your great work on these quizzes – truly amazing and enjoyable to play!
I’ve been wondering for a while, why do we have two Dohas and two Kuwait Cities?
Also, there seems to be some kind of bug with the scoring at advanced and expert, for most scores except a few it says 0 minutes 0 seconds.
Per citypopulation.de, there are multiple areas with names similar to those two cities in Kuwait and Qatar which are counted as cities by their censuses.
Really having a fun time speedrunning this. Helps that cities like “St Louis” or “San Juan” have significant transcontinental coverage!
Is this quiz no longer available to non premium users? I used to be non premium users could play it every other week.
The schedule changed you can click the message to see it, you do get to play World City quizzes the 2nd week of each month…too many people on the site now 🙂
How is the server run that the traffic needs to be so actively controlled? It seems like a hassle tbh
The server runs fine. However Google charges for using their maps API. So I have to limit somehow how many non members get to play the quizzes I pay for people playing.
Interestingly, putting Sittwe, Myanmar doesn’t not work, but Akyab does!
Ahh it should be Sittwe but I’ll accept both.
the leaderboard is a mess due to the change in total number of cities… also some times seem suspiciously low
yes for these coverage quizzes where score is based on total # of cities the old high scores will move down when new cities are added to my database due to updates on citypopulation.de
For some reason Gitega is missing
Based on citypopulation.de it’s under 50k. no current estimates for a long time from Burundi
shout out to Darin, this guy is thorough, nice job 🙂
Why is Muscat not there, if going of urban area that is almost at a million
populations on my city quizzes are city proper, Muscat is tiny city proper
As a former Muscat resident, I’ll try to explain this. On Citypopulation, the site lists “As-Sib” as being the largest city in Oman. I lived in As-Sib. Technically. It’s a neighborhood. 400,000 people may seem large for a neighborhood, but that’s what it is. I’ve heard of Matrah (it’s Mutrah), one of the other districts. That’s where the Old City is located-the only reason people might use the word Mutrah is discussing tourism. Honestly, Bawshar, the other one, I don’t even know that. If you said you lived in Bawshar, I’d ask where that was. They’re all Muscat. People also know Ruwi-this is a commercial area where you will only see people of South Asian descent. I remember once asking for my address and realizing I immediately made a mistake-the poor secretary started writing six lines:
Area (Al Hail South for me)
Building No.: xxxx
Way No.: xxxx
Street No.: xxxx (the same number as the way number!)
Block No.: xxx
Plot No: x/xxx
I can’t think of another example in any capital city like Muscat. I’ve lived in Kharkiv, Aden, Dushanbe, Sana’a, Ankara, Istanbul, Sousse, Damascus, and Buenos Aires and while I can tell you the districts I lived in, it’s not like “Baghdad Street” is a valid answer for the capital of Syria.
Another quick useless fact. I should correct myself. I lived in Seeb (spelled that way in English). Except for citypopulation, I have never seen “Sib” written and I have never heard a person use the definite article (al, as in this case) to describe it.
What is missing for France if you have mainland and French Guiana?
French Polynesia
I see no 50k+ city
Now that I have premium I can see that Noumea was missing
I’m a bit confused… I just paid to become a Premium Member but I still can’t see the city names anywhere? When I hover my mouse over a checkmark, it only indicated the population number… I am very disappointed
it’s when the quiz is over you mouse over the purple colored markers that appear, 25 of them will appear, those are missed cities. the markers that appear during the game that you get only show populations
I tried to put in Yelizovo cuz it was one of the two Russian ones I was missing, but it didn’t seem to work, is it under a different name (I ended up typing Magadan to get it within the circle but I’m curious for the future)
it’s under 50k
whats the petropavlosk kamchatskiy city name i cant spell it right
Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky, don’t use an “i” in the Kamchatsky part.
It’s petropavlovsk kamchatsky and magadan
Hi, could you consider put a untimed possibility for learing purposes?
Premium users get a 3 hour practice with the radius of their choice.
Did a new city get added to Saudi Arabia? On the intermediate level, I don’t remember having to type Riyadh to complete the country. Putting in Doha, Sanaa, Mecca, Hail, Abha, Basra, Tikrit, & Salt seemed to cover it before. But now I have to type in Riyadh to cover the country. Or did one of the cities I listed get slightly moved away from the center of the country?
new cities from updated data on citypopulation.de
It appears Nuuk doesnt work for greenland. is it under another name?
not 50k population
What is the city in northeast Alberta? It’s obviously Fort McMurray, but that isn’t an accepted answer. Is it in the list under another name?
use Wood Buffalo – Ft McMurray is a very large regional muni.
This isn’t quite right, Wood Buffalo is the extremely large regional municipality (over 60000 sq km according to Statistics Canada), and Fort McMurray is the local population center (how StatCan classifies towns, cities, etc) with population 68002 according to the Canadian 2021 census
I’m going by this:
http://citypopulation.de/en/canada/cities/alberta/
I’ll add Ft McMurray as an alternate answer
Interesting, this one seems to have it correct: https://citypopulation.de/en/canada/cities/
with no Wood Buffalo listed. Similarly, https://citypopulation.de/en/canada/alberta/_/UA0292__wood_buffalo_fort_mcmurra/
also Statistics Canada has Fort McMurray as the population center and Wood Buffalo as the large region
Great puzzle and website, congrats! It would be nice to add Cordova as a valid spelling for the Spanish -speaking cities of Córdoba.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%B3rdoba,_Spain
added
Cape Breton, Canada doesn’t seem to be a valid answer, but it shows up on other quizes as a 50k+ city. According to this http://www.citypopulation.de/en/canada/cities/novascotia/?cityid=2799, it has a population of 94007.
that’s the urban area – proper is here: http://citypopulation.de/en/canada/novascotia/_/UA0913__cape_breton_sydney/
But the world cities random grid quiz does not use urban area. I had Cape Breton as an answer there multiple times. Its also an answer in North America city grid and Canada city grid and its given population there is about 90k.
fixing it for the other quizzes now.
Kazakhstan ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
haha 🙂
Sānménxiá (Henen, China) is a bit off, too, lies in Shanxi. Also, as BaronBones remarked below, Pematangsiantar in Indonesia is placed on the wrong island. Maybe you could correct this, too.
Might I ask what source you used for the cities in Myanmar (name, population); I can’t recognise your selection on citypop? Thanks a lot!
Sorry. me again, Milange (Mozambique) lies im Malawi on your map. Maybe you could double check? Thanks
yeah it was a little off – corrected.
This quiz seems to be missing Shepparton, Australia, although other quizes do have it (as a 50k+ city)
latest estimates have it just under 50K – I updated World cities most recently so when I updated Oceania-only populations it will be just under 50K.
On Australia city grid for example Shepparton has a 50-75k pin though.
Also, Pematangsiantar in Indonesia seems to have the wrong coordinates: it’s supposed to be in North Sumatra, but it shows up on Central Java. Seems to be in the wrong spot on random grid world as well (had a tile that had to be Pematangsiantar according to citypopulation.de, but instead the answer was Tebbingtinggi).
Missed one city in Russia and one in Algeria. Looks like either Tamanrasset or Djanet in Algeria, it appears by other comments that Salekhard was the one in Russia I missed
Finally a 100% on intermediate. What a tough but fun quiz. How people are able to figure out the least amount of cities to be the most efficient, I’m not sure how they are able to do it so well. I’ll have to redo intermediate a few more times before I dare try advanced.
I’ve added a handful of missed cities and upped the point totals of the perfect scores accordingly.
Great. Now there’s some random Portugal oversees territory city out there I can’t find now. It’s not Praia. What a pain to be so close to 100%. 9453/9455.
Ah, it was Funchal.
I got 9448 but can’t find that elusive missing Russian city. It’s not Norilsk, Magadan, Novy Urengoy, Yakutsk, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Murmansk, Surgut, Ufa, Omsk, Tomsk, Bratsk, Kazan, Volgograd, Moscow, Syktyvkar, Arkhangelsk, Salekhard, etc. I cannot figure out if it’s in Siberia or farther east. It’s driving me crazy.
I think it was Neryungri, btw.
Could it have been Khabarovsk, perhaps?
Is petropavlovsk on the quiz? I always seem to get a marker around that area whenever i do cities in that vicinity, but im not able to type it in.
the city name is Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky
I tried to enter this but I missed the second ‘v’
i always used a different spelling or just tried “petropavlovsk”, never worked so i usually left it.
I got 9240 on my first try. I did search up some cities to get their spelling, but I already knew those before.
new cities added! 140 or so with my every 2-year or so updated of world 50K+ city populations 🙂
First attempt was 9081, all from memory
9213
9000 on the first try, with the help of wikipedia, sometimes the city names are very different in english xD
btw, great quiz
Is there a time limit to this quiz? Suddenly, it just stopped.
yep there is a timer going you can see
Yes, thank you! Eventually figured it out 🙂 Great set of quizzes!
out of curiosity: where did you get the raw data for this, is it publicly available?
citypopulation.de
very cool, I’ll check it out. Thanks!
Why isn’t bucarest a city
it’s spelled Bucharest
i am very disappointed i didnt get everything in russia, i have no idea what i even missed
premium members can see top 25 missed 🙂
Did you get Norilsk?
The hard cities are Norilsk, Yakustk, Salekhard, Magadan etc.
Yakutsk is easy if you’ve played Risk! 🙂
Why doesn’t Muscat, the capital of Oman work. it has a population of over 1 million.
according to citypopulation.de the actual city proper is small
The city proper still has a population of 750k according to multiple sources.
you’re looking at the whole governate…city itself is much smaller http://citypopulation.de/en/oman/cities/
