it’s not an island though – it’s defined as a continent instead.
I disagree, Australia is definitely an island. The continent of Australia also includes Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Tasmania, and New Caledonia; and you can also add Micronesia, Polynesia, and Melanesia.
In general it’s considered by most a ‘continental landmass’ too big to be an island, which is how it is defined here and on pretty much all other large quiz sites:
