Canada 100 Km Expanding Circles Challenge – Choose City

First choose any Canada city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name the largest Canada city in each 100 km circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer if it is the largest city in that area.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's correct answer at right (under 'Answer Stats' by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose 'Toronto' - you will be shown a circle of radius 100 km centered at Toronto. Naming the largest city in this circle (Toronto in this case) will cause another 'ring' of radius 100 km to appear outside that circle. You now need to name the largest Canada city in that ring (but not within any previous circles/rings). If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. The object of this quiz is to adjust each circle's radius so it contains the target population shown at the right. When you click Start you will be shown a marker on a random Canada dissemination area (there are over 55K dissemination areas across Canada, the smallest census tabulation area). Also you will see an adjustable circle of radius 100 km to start. Adjust the circle's radius by dragging it until it contains the target number of people shown - this target will be between 10K and 5 million people. Then click submit. You are scored on how close your circle's population is to the target. Circle population is tallied by totaling all output areas within that circle.

Canada Cities Grid Identifier Challenge

The object of this quiz is to double-click the grid square where cities are located (the centroid of the city is used). When you begin you will have a grid randomly placed with size 5 degrees latitude by 5 degrees longitude. You will be told which city to locate - simply double-click on that city's grid square and you will move on to the next city. Each time you go to a new city the squares are randomly redrawn and with a size 10% smaller. The first 10 cities will be 250K+, the next 10 100-250K, next 10 50-100K and the balance (until you run out of time or guess wrong) will be 25-50K. Canada Grid Path Challenge – All Cities

Choose a level by typing ‘beg’, ‘int’, ‘adv’, or ‘exp’ – beg level is 5 degree squares, int 2.5 degrees, adv 1 degree, and exp 0.5 degrees. Then, name any Canada city to start with by entering it (cities with the same name will choose the largest city of that name first). The grid square you are starting in will turn yellow - you now must name any city in any one of the adjacent grid squares (not including diagonal) - so any grid square directly north, south, east or west of the yellow one. Naming a city in one of these squares will turn your original square red and the current newly named city square yellow - continue in the same way trying to make a path of as many squares as you can. You are not allowed to return to a red square, and if you get 'boxed in' with no squares left to complete the quiz will also end.

Be aware that as you name cities it will answer the largest city first, so if you are trying to answer a city in a square to the east but a larger city of that name occurs a square to the north, the north one will be answered.

Canada Grid Top 5 Challenge

Type 'easy' or 'hard' to begin the quiz. Easy is a 10-degree grid, hard is a 5-degree grid. Then, try to name the largest Canada cities in each square IN ORDER. To name a city, you must first click on the grid square to make it have a GREEN border. Then, type in the city answer for that square followed by a '.' (a period).

The squares will start with '0/5' (or maybe fewer cities if less exist in that square). Click on a square and enter the largest city in that square not yet answered (so, the largest city if you have yet to answer a city in that square). You will then have '1/5' and need to click on that square to name the 2nd largest city, and so on until you complete all the cities up to 5 (or less if less exist). If you name an incorrect city in a square it becomes 'locked' and turns red and you can no longer accumulate cities in that square.

You receive 1 point for the largest city in a square, 2 for the 2nd largest, and so on.

Canada Province/Territory Drawing Challenge

You'll be freehand drawing the provinces/territories of Canada. When the quiz loads on the right side you will be told which prov/terr to draw. To begin drawing a prov/terr, click Draw or right-click anywhere in the map to enter drawing mode. Click and drag the mouse to make an outline of the prov/terr. Release the mouse to 'close' the prov/terr and it will appear green. If happy and ready to submit, click submit or double-click the drawn prov/terr. Click erase or right-click the prov/terr to erase it and try again. You may have to wait a few moments for your score to calculate on larger prov/terr.

You are only drawing the main portion of each prov/terr - do not worry about any disjointed islands, etc. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are not included as they are simply islands to trace.

When you submit a prov/terr you are scored on the % of your prov/terr which contains the actual prov/terr (shown as '% In Prov/Terr') and the % of the actual prov/terr contained in your prov/terr (shown as '% Of Prov/Terr'). These average out to create your points for that prov/terr.

US 10 Circle Population Challenge

The object of this quiz is to place 10 circles of radius 100 miles on the map so that they contain the largest total population.

When you begin you'll be given a 100-mile radius circle centered on the map. Move it using the mouse and click SUBMIT. You will be given a score for that circle corresponding to the total population among all US census tracts within it (there are about 85K total US census tracts averaging about 4K people each). Try to complete all 10 circles with the highest total score.

The object of this quiz is to name (see NAMING NOTE below) as many US 100K+ cities as possible starting from the position you choose without skipping cities moving in the opposite direction. For example, if you choose 'S' you 'start' at extreme southern US to begin you are aiming to name the most southern US 100K+ city, then the 2nd most southern, and so on as you move north. Naming correct cities increases the population counter - the object is to get the highest total population among all cities you name. However, once you move in a direction you can't name cities already passed by (i.e. covered in the blue shaded region).

NAMING NOTE: You must end each city name with a period - i.e. 'Dallas.' - this prevents naming a city whose name is a partial name of the city you want to answer. Upon clicking START you will be presented with a 5×5 grid of 25 of the 50 largest US metropolitan statistical areas (MSA's).

The object of this quiz is to choose the top 3 in the given category for the metro areas shown in the grid. When you begin you’ll be given 25 different metro areas plus a category to name the top 3 in, which will display just above the grid. For example, if the category says ‘Top 3 Largest Area’ you are to click on the 3 metro areas with the largest area. The object of this quiz is to click on 50K+ city locations as quickly and accurately as you can. You get 25 random US cities from among all US 50K+ cities. You will be scored based on Time, Distance, and Closest Cities. The object of this quiz is to pick a 50K+ US city to start, then name successive 50K+ cities such that the next city's first letter is the last letter of the current city and the next city is as close to the current city as possible. You must name cities in the format 'City, State' with the state abbreviation following the city.

For example, you start with 'Chicago, IL' - you are now trying to name a city starting with 'O' (the last letter of 'Chicago') which is closest to Chicago. If you answer 'Omaha, NE' - now you are trying to name the closest city to Omaha which starts with a 'A' and so on.

US City Name Link Challenge

The object of this quiz is to pick a city to start, then name successive cities such that the next city's first letter is the last letter of the current city and the next city is as close to the current city as possible. You must name cities in the format 'City, State' with the state abbreviation following the city.

For example, you start with 'Chicago, IL' - you are now trying to name a city starting with 'O' (the last letter of 'Chicago') which is closest to Chicago. If you answer 'Oak Park, IL' - now you are trying to name the closest city to Oak Park which starts with a 'K' and so on.

The quiz ends at the 25th city from the starting one. You get 100 points for naming the closest city on each step, and they decline based on the distance your city was from the closest. You get 15 minutes to complete the quiz.

US Expanding Circle Population Challenge – Your Location

First enter a level by typing '5M', '2.5M', '1M', or '500K' - you begin with that population figure (shown by 'Population Remaining'...the bigger the number the easier the quiz). The object of this quiz is to accumulate 'Population Gotten' by typing in US cities (see naming note below) moving outward from your marker without skipping cities. Any city skipped will count against your Population Remaining. Any city guessed correctly counts toward your Population Gotten. Population Gotten is your score for this quiz, this is the number you want to have as high as possible - it is the sum of the population of all your guesses.

Naming Note: You must add a '.' at the end of each city name for it to take - this is to prevent typing in another city name which is the first few letters of the city you wanted to type. There are a good number of these so to make it easiest I am simply requiring a '.' after each name you enter.

There are no time bonuses on this quiz.

US Expanding Circles Challenge – Your Location

First choose a level by typing '5.', '10', '25' or '50' (need to add the '.' with 5 so you can type 50 without choosing '5') - then name the largest city in the circle/ring of that distance range as the rings expand outward from your location. You need to have your browser's location function working or the quiz will not load.

You MUST have a city within the initial distance you choose for your level - so this quiz will not work if you are not within the US (or at least not within your level's distance of a US city).

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's correct answer at right (under 'Answer Stats' by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose '10' - you will be shown a circle of radius 10 miles centered at your location. Naming the largest city in this circle will cause another 'ring' of radius 10 to appear outside that circle. You now need to name the largest city in that ring (but not within any previous circles/rings). If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. You begin the quiz with 25 different routes between cities listed in the table. The routes are chosen randomly from among all possible pairs of the 50 largest US cities plus the largest city in each state. No route will have less than 5 total states.

You are to name the states (using state abbreviations) in order you cross over when flying from the first city to the second. City routes are from the city centers NOT the airports. You are answering the states in order of first to last based on when you FIRST fly over them (occasionally you may fly over a state, then another, then the previous state again, do NOT list the first state twice). Each state therefore is only answered once. The first state is always the state you depart from. The last state is generally the destination state, but not always (as you may have crossed over it previously then another state, then back over it to land).

You get 5 seconds added for each state you guess correctly. If you enter an incorrect state or a state not in the right order, the game will end.

You continue to the next state as long as your points for the last state meet the minimum (60, 70, 80, or 90) based on the level you chose. Otherwise the game is over.

You are only drawing the main portion of each state - do not worry about any disjointed islands, etc.

When you submit a state you are scored on the % of your state which contains the actual state (shown as '% In State') and the % of the actual state contained in your state (shown as '% Of State'). These average out to create your points for that state.

US State Triplets Blackout Challenge

Upon clicking START you will be presented with a 5×5 grid of US states.

The object of this quiz is to choose the top 3 in the given category for the states shown in the grid. When you begin you’ll be given 25 different states plus a category to name the top 3 in, which will display just above the grid. For example, if the category says ‘Top 3 Largest Area’ you are to click on the 3 states with the largest area. If it says ‘Top 3 Smallest Max Elevation’ you are to click on the 3 states whose max elevation is the lowest. You can deselect the first or second state you chose on by re-clicking it, but when you choose the 3rd state they will be submitted, removed from the grid, and you will get a score from 0-100 based on how close your set of 3 comes to the optimum set of 3 (which will be shown as a ‘Rank’ on top out of the # of possible sets of 3 for the last choice). When you’ve answered all 8 sets of 3 leaving only 1 state the quiz is over. You get a 100 points bonus for completing the sets making for a total possible score of 2500.

US States Placement Challenge

The object of this quiz is to drag the US states into their correct positions on the map. More northern states will appear at the beginning lined across the top, southern states along the bottom. When you drag on a state you will see that state's name on the right of the map. Double-click the state to 'lock' it in place and you will obtain a score up to 100 based on how close the center of the state is to the actual center coordinates.

A few states with multiple separate land areas such as Hawaii and Michigan will only have their largest portion show up as an outline.

You can end the quiz at any time or double-click on all 50 states to place them to end the quiz as well. Only the largest portion of each state will be shown (if a state has disjointed areas).
