Name the world's 100 highest summits according to prominence...Prominence is the elevation of a summit relative to the highest point to which one must descend before reascending to a higher summit. Think of it as the height of a mountain relative to the closest higher mountain. So a mountain that is the highest of anything nearby will have a high prominence, while nearby mountains that are close but not as tall will have a relatively low prominence. No need to type Mt/Mount/etc.

World 100 Km Expanding Circles Any City Challenge – Choose City

First choose any World 50K+ city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name ANY World 50K+ city in each 100km circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's largest correct answer at right (under 'Answer Stats' by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose 'Paris, France' - you will be shown a circle of radius 100km centered at Paris. Naming any 50K+ city in this circle (including Paris) will cause another 'ring' of radius 100km to appear outside that circle. You now need to name the any World 50K+ city in that ring (but not within any previous circles/rings). If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. So if a city doesn't fall within 200-300km, it will expand to be a 200-400km ring, then 200-500km and so on until a qualifying city is found within the ring.

First choose any World 50K+ city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name any World 50K+ city in each 100 km circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice - NOTE - you must enter a period '.' at the end of the city to submit it. The first circle will include your city of choice as guessed. The object in this quiz is to guess the city in the next ring which is as close to the previous city as possible. The closest city will get you 100 points, the farthest away answer, 0 points.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's closest correct answer at right.

For example, if you choose ‘Paris, France’ – you will be shown a circle of radius 100 km centered at Paris and Paris will be selected. You will also see a ring of radius 100 km outside that circle. Naming a city in this ring will cause another ‘ring’ of radius 100 km to appear outside that ring and you will get 0-100 points, depending how close to Paris your city was. If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. So if a city doesn’t fall within 100-200 kms, it will expand to be a 100-300 km ring, then 100-400 km and so on until a qualifying city is found within the ring.

Then, name the largest World 50K+ city in each 100km circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice. When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's correct answer at right (under 'Answer Stats' by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose 'Paris, France' - you will be shown a circle of radius 100km centered at Paris. World 100 Km Expanding Circles Largest City Challenge – Choose City

First choose any World 50K+ pop city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name any World 50K+ city in each 100 km circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice, trying to name LARGEST city in each circle. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer.

PLEASE NOTE - You must type a '.' (period) after each city to submit it to prevent answering another city with a name you would be have to type to get your answer. If multiple cities have the name you submitted, only the largest one will be counted.

You accumulate points based on the population of the city you named in relation to the largest city in the circle. Naming the largest city will get you 100 points. A smaller city’s point total will be the ratio of its population to the largest, so if you name a city of 75K people and the largest city has 100K, you get 75 points.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring’s largest correct answer at right (under ‘Answer Stats’ by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose ‘Paris’ – you will be shown a circle of radius 100 km centered at Paris. Naming any city in this circle (including Paris) will cause another ‘ring’ of radius 100 km to appear outside that circle, however - you will want to try naming the LARGEST city you can to get more points (Paris will be 100 points). After completing that circle, you now need to name any 50K+ World city in the new ring (but not within any previous circles/rings), again trying to name as large a city as possible. If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. So if a city doesn’t fall within 100-200 km, it will expand to be a 100-300 km ring, then 300-400 km and so on until a qualifying city is found within the ring.

World 1M+ Agglomerations Name Link Challenge

The object of this quiz is to pick a world 1M+ agglomeration to start, then name successive 1M+ agglomerations such that the next agglo's first letter is the last letter of the current agglo and the next agglo is as close to the current agglo as possible. On this quiz alternates are generally accepted, however only the main (usually official) name is counted as it relates to naming the next agglo. Agglomerations of the same name will answer the closest one first. NOTE: You must type a '.' (period) after the agglo name to submit it. The same agglo cannot be used twice in this quiz.

For example, you start with 'Paris' - you are now trying to name a city starting with 'S' (the last letter of 'Paris') which is closest to Paris. If you answer 'Sevilla' - now you are trying to name the closest 1M+ agglo to Sevilla which starts with a 'A' and so on.

The quiz ends at the 25th agglo from the starting one. You get 100 points for naming the closest agglo on each step, and they decline based on the distance your agglo was from the closest. You get 15 minutes to complete the quiz.

+

420

World 1M+ Agglos Direction Challenge

The object of this quiz is to name (see NAMING NOTE below) as many World 1M+ agglomerations as possible starting from the position you choose without skipping agglos moving in the opposite direction. For example, if you choose 'S' you 'start' at the South Pole to begin and you are aiming to name the most southern World 1M+ agglo, then the 2nd most southern, and so on as you move north. Naming correct agglos increases the population counter - the object is to get the highest total population among all agglos you name. However, once you move in a direction you can't name agglos already passed by (i.e. covered in the blue shaded region).

NAMING NOTE: You must end each agglo name with a period - i.e. 'Tokyo.' - this prevents naming an agglo whose name is a partial name of the agglo you want to answer. If you name an agglo that has multiple answers, only the closest upcoming one will be answered for you, so you won't name the farther away agglo from the one you are trying to guess.

You don't start with a ton of time, however there is a 30 second time bonus for naming the next agglo in order, and a 15 second bonus for naming the 2nd or 3rd next one in order. So if you name well you can accumulate a lot of extra time.

Please note - North/South America and the rest of the world are considered separate sections on this quiz. The game will not end if you haven't begun one of them and then 'jump' over to it to begin working on it. So you get one free city to choose outside of the 500km distance if you want to start working on the section you haven't started. But once you have started both NA/SA and Rest of World, you cannot guess a city outside a 500km circle or the quiz will end.

Naming notes: many places have similar names. For example, “Brest” is not unique. To choose Brest, France, simply type “brestfr”, using the first two letters of the country name...another example is "londonun". Also, some answers require typing in other answers you may not want to guess. In this case, if you want to answer “Hamburg”, simply type it..”Ham, Belgium” will not be chosen. If you want simply “Ham” type ‘ham.’ with the period at the end. One other issue is multiple cities in the US with the same name, for these type in the state abbreviation and 'us' at the end - i.e. 'jacksonvilleflus' - if a place name outside the US has multiple locations in a country you can use 'fuzhouch1', 'fuzhouch2' etc for the Fuzhou's in China.

World 500 Km Expanding Circles 2nd Largest City Challenge – Choose City

First choose any World 50K+ pop city by entering it and choosing it in the drop-down box. Then, name any World 50K+ city in each 500 km circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice, trying to name SECOND LARGEST city in each circle. The first circle will include your city of choice as a possible answer.

PLEASE NOTE - You must type a '.' (period) after each city to submit it to prevent answering another city with a name you would be have to type to get your answer. If multiple cities have the name you submitted, only the largest one will be counted.

You accumulate points based on the population of the city you named in relation to the second largest city in the circle. A smaller city’s point total will be the ratio of its population to the largest, so if you name a city of 75K people and the largest city has 100K, you get 75 points. Naming the largest city will get you points based on the ratio of the 2nd largest city's population to the largest city's.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring’s 2nd largest city at right (under ‘Answer Stats’ by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose ‘Paris’ – you will be shown a circle of radius 500 km centered at Paris. Naming any city in this circle (including Paris) will cause another ‘ring’ of radius 500 km to appear outside that circle, however - you will want to try naming the SECOND LARGEST city you can to get more points. After completing that circle, you now need to name any 50K+ World city in the new ring (but not within any previous circles/rings), again trying to name the 2nd largest city. If there are not two cities within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until two cities fall within it.

World 500K+ Cities Locator Timed Challenge

The object of this quiz is to click on 500K+ city locations as quickly and accurately as you can. You get 25 random World cities from among all World 250K+ cities. You will be scored based on Time, Distance, and Closest Cities. Closest Cities refers to how many cities (among ALL 50K+ cities, not just 500K+ ones) are located closer to the actual city's location than where you clicked. Upon clicking START you will see cities listed one at a time in the upper right on the side of the map. Double-click where that city is as fast and accurately as possible. You will then get a score of 0-100 based on those 3 factors. Also, up to 10 of the closest cities to the target city that you weren't within will be displayed. Click NEXT CITY to continue on.

To make things easier, you will get at most 2 cities from each country each time you play.

NOTE – For cities with the same name, you are trying to click on the LARGEST city of that name.

For Premium members, this quiz is much easier to play on Google Maps full screen mode.

World 50K+ City Name Link Challenge

The object of this quiz is to pick a city to start, then name successive cities such that the next city's first letter is the last letter of the current city and the next city is as close to the current city as possible. On this quiz alternates are generally accepted, however only the main (usually official) name is counted as it relates to naming the next city. Cities of the same name will answer the closest city first. NOTE: You must type a '.' (period) after the city to submit it. Cities must be a minimum of 50k population. The same city cannot be used twice in this quiz.

For example, you start with 'Paris' - you are now trying to name a city starting with 'S' (the last letter of 'Paris') which is closest to Paris. If you answer 'Strasbourg' - now you are trying to name the closest city to Strasbourg which starts with a 'G' and so on.

The quiz ends at the 25th city from the starting one. You get 100 points for naming the closest city on each step, and they decline based on the distance your city was from the closest. You get 15 minutes to complete the quiz.

World 50K+ City Shrinking Coverage Challenge

You begin with a radius of 1500km. Enter World 50K+ city names and all 50K+ World cities within that radius will fill in, HOWEVER each time you use a circle the radius will shrink by 5%. Try to cover as many cities as possible as the circles get smaller. Time is not part of the score on this quiz.

hugequiz Premium members will see the 25 largest missed cities at the end of the quiz as large, purple markers.

Notes for this quiz: answering a city that has the same name in multiple locations will reduce the circle 5% in radius for each unique city that matches, so if you enter 'Brest' - it will fill one of the 2 with whatever radius you are at, then shrink it 5% and fill the other, and again shrink it 5% more until you make your next guess. So it may not be wise to use a common city name. Also, to enter a city such as 'Mexico City' without entering 'Mexico' (a city in Philippines) you can simply type for example "xmexicocity" then delete the x, thereby preventing you from typing 'mexico' - there are a handful of cities like this.

Begin by entering a number of cities - '50', '100', '250' or '5h' - then name the closest world cities of 50K+ population to your geographic location (as determined by your browser's location function) IN ORDER - meaning you have to name the closest first, then the 2nd closest, etc. Your location will show up as a bright purple marker, and the location you need to name (the closest unnamed one) will show up as a larger marker color-coded according to its population.

To use this quiz you will have to choose 'Allow' if your browser asks to share your current location - you also may have to restart the quiz after choosing this. If your browser does not allow getting your location the quiz will not load.

World 50K+ Expanding Circle Population Challenge – Your Location

First enter a level by typing '25M', '10M', '5M', or '1M' - you begin with that population figure (shown by 'Population Remaining'...the bigger the number the easier the quiz). The quiz will center in on your location - you must have your browser's location figure on. A pink marker will be placed at this location.

The object of this quiz is to accumulate 'Population Gotten' by typing in world 50K+ cities (see naming note below) moving outward from your marker without skipping cities. Any 50K+ city skipped will count against your Population Remaining. Any 50K+ city guessed correctly counts toward your Population Gotten. Population Gotten is your score for this quiz, this is the number you want to have as high as possible - it is the sum of the population of all your guesses.

Naming Note: You must add a '.' at the end of each city name for it to take - this is to prevent typing in another city name which is the first few letters of the city you wanted to type. There are a good number of these so to make it easiest I am simply requiring a '.' after each name you enter.

There are no time bonuses on this quiz.

A circle will be drawn going out to your last guess and showing that guess as a green marker and any missed cities that were closer as a red marker. All members can mouseover the green markers to see what their name, population and rank in terms of closeness to your location (i.e. #10 is 10th closest 50K+ city). hugequiz Premium members can hover over the red markers as well to see the missed cities and their info.

HOWEVER - for this quiz you can enter any 50K+ city for your first choice, but successive cities must be already within a blue band for you to answer them, so you must 'expand' the blue area in the north and south directions, you can't start a new blue band with a gap away from a currently blue shaded area.

Then you will have two bands you can expand independently as you play the quiz.

HOWEVER - for this quiz you can enter any 50K+ city for your first choice, but successive cities must be already within a blue band for you to answer them, so you must 'expand' the blue area in the east and west directions, you can't start a new blue band with a gap away from a currently blue shaded area.

All cities of 50K+ population starting with the city you chose and moving outward will begin filling in until you've hit a total population equal to or greater than your chosen level's threshold. For example, if you choose 'int' - the threshold is 10 million. If you choose 'paris', then Paris will fill in and because its population is under 10 million, successive cities moving outward from Paris will fill in until the total population reaches at least 10 million. You must complete 50 countries for your score to save - so for example you can't get 'stuck' somewhere like South Korea with no other countries available to click on unless it happens to be your 50th country clicked.

For example, you can begin by clicking Russia - your next country can be any country bordering Russia, such as Ukraine. After clicking Ukraine you can choose any country bordering Ukraine except a country you have already visited (in this case just Russia). You must continue along your path and can't click a bordering country from a previously-clicked country unless it borders the country you just clicked.

World Capitals Name Link Challenge

The object of this quiz is to pick a world country capital to start, then name successive captials such that the next capital's first letter is the last letter of the current capital and the next capital is as close to the current capital as possible. NOTE: You must type a '.' (period) after the capital name to submit it. The same capital cannot be used twice in this quiz.

For example, you start with 'Paris' - you are now trying to name a capital city starting with 'S' (the last letter of 'Paris') which is closest to Paris. If you answer 'Sofia' - now you are trying to name the closest capital to Sofia which starts with a 'A' and so on.

The quiz ends at the 25th capital from the starting one. You get 100 points for naming the closest capital on each step, and they decline based on the distance your capital was from the closest. You get 15 minutes to complete the quiz.

When you click Start you will be shown a marker on a random populated world grid square (there are over 800K 10x10 km grid squares used for the data, courtesy of https://human-settlement.emergency.copernicus.eu/index.php). Also you will see an adjustable circle of radius 500 km to start. Adjust the circle's radius by dragging it until it contains the target number of people shown - this target will be between 2.5 and 250 million people. Then click submit. You are scored on how close your circle's population is to the target.

World Cities Grid Identifier Challenge

The object of this quiz is to double-click the grid square where cities are located (the centroid of the city is used). When you begin you will have a grid randomly placed with size 15 degrees latitude by 15 degrees longitude. You will be told which city to locate – simply double-click on that city’s grid square and you will move on to the next city. Each time you go to a new city the squares are randomly redrawn and with a size 10% smaller. The first 10 cities will be 5M+, the next 10 2.5-5M, next 10 1-2.5M and the balance (until you run out of time or guess wrong) will be 500K-1M. When you guess wrong the correct location will be shown as a pink marker.

You will not get more than one city per country in the first 3 groupings of 10, however for the final balance (when the cities are 500K-1M) there is no limit to how many cities in one country you will get.

You do get a break if you are within 2 km of the city but in the wrong square – you will not get credit for the guess but will get another chance at that level.

After the quiz is over you can click RESTART to retry it without refreshing the page.

If you are under the max distance allowed you will move on to the next city. When you double-click farther away than the max distance allowed the quiz will end.

When you submit a country you are scored on the % of your country which contains the actual country (shown as '% In Country') and the % of the actual country contained in your country (shown as '% Of Country'). These average out to create your points for that country.

Complete 10 countries or click End Quiz at any time to save your score. You will then see a satellite view of the World with your countries in place.

World Country Drawing Challenge Streak

First enter 'beg', 'int', 'adv', or 'exp' to begin. Beginner corresponds to 60 points, intermediate to 70 points, advanced to 80 points and expert to 90 points. This is the number of points you will need to score drawing each country to get to continue on to the next country. The object is to complete as many countries as you can.

You'll be freehand drawing the countries of the World. When the quiz loads on the right side you will be told which country to draw. To begin drawing a country, click Draw or right-click anywhere in the map to enter drawing mode. Click and drag the mouse to make an outline of the country. Release the mouse to 'close' the country and it will appear green. If happy and ready to submit, click submit or double-click the drawn country. Click erase or right-click the country to erase it and try again. You may have to wait a few moments for your score on larger countries.

You continue to the next country as long as your points for the last country meet the minimum (60, 70, 80, or 90) based on the level you chose. Otherwise the game is over.

You are only drawing the main portion of each country – do not worry about any disjointed islands, etc. Island countries (or predominantly island countries) are not included.

When you submit a country you are scored on the % of your country which contains the actual country (shown as '% In Country') and the % of the actual country contained in your country (shown as '% Of Country'). These average out to create your points for that country.

121

World Expanding Circles Challenge – Your Location

First choose a level by typing '50.', '100', '250' or '500' - (need the period after '50' so 500 can be typed) then name the largest World 50K+ city in the circle/ring of that distance range (in km) as the rings expand outward from your location. You need to have your browser's location function working or the quiz will not load.

You MUST have a city within the initial distance you choose for your level - so this quiz will not work if you are not within a 50K+ city at the distance you chose to begin with.

When you run out of time or end the quiz, you will see the current ring's correct answer at right (under 'Answer Stats' by your coordinates).

For example, if you choose '250' - you will be shown a circle of radius 250 km centered at your location. Naming the largest city in this circle will cause another 'ring' of radius 250 km to appear outside that circle. You now need to name the largest World 50K+ city in that ring (but not within any previous circles/rings). If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it. So if a city doesn't fall within 250-500 km (assuming your level is 250 km), it will expand to be a 250-750 km ring, then 250-1000 km and so on until a city is found within the ring.

World Grid Head To Head City Capture

This quiz is only available in Head-To-Head mode.

First, choose a difficulty by typing ‘beg’, ‘int’, ‘adv, or ‘exp’ – Beginner is 15 degrees, Intermediate 10 degrees, Advanced 5 degrees, and Expert 2.5 degrees. Then, take turns entering the largest city (min 50K population) in each grid square of the size based on your difficulty. Green squares contain answers. There will be a white (Player 1) and a black (Player 2) competitor - when you answer a square it will fill in with your color.

When you have a square with your color surrounded in all directions (north, south, east, west - whichever are available) by other squares also of your color, it becomes 'captured' and the city in that surrounded square has its population added to your score.

The player with the highest score at the end of the quiz wins.

So for example in this World quiz, Black has scored on Chicago (circled) and Anchorage, and white has scored on Madrid (circled) and Reykjavik.

hugequiz Premium members will see the top 25 missed cities at the end of the quiz as purple markers.

+

World Grid Path Challenge – All Cities

Choose a level by typing ‘beg’, ‘int’, ‘adv’, or ‘exp’ – beg level is 15 degree squares, int 10 degrees, adv 5 degree, and exp 2.5 degrees. Then, name any 50K+ World city to start with by entering it (cities with the same name will choose the largest city of that name first). The grid square you are starting in will turn yellow - you now must name any city in any one of the adjacent grid squares (not including diagonal) - so any grid square directly north, south, east or west of the yellow one. Naming a city in one of these squares will turn your original square red and the current newly named city square yellow - continue in the same way trying to make a path of as many squares as you can. You are not allowed to return to a red square, and if you get 'boxed in' with no squares left to complete the quiz will also end.

Be aware that as you name cities it will answer the largest city first, so if you are trying to answer a city in a square to the east but a larger city of that name occurs a square to the north, the north one will be answered.

PLEASE NOTE: You get TWO separate 'paths' to create - one within the Americas and one within Europe/Africa/Asia/Oceania. You can start on either side and hop over to the other side whenever, in which case you will have 2 yellow squares to continue paths on.

Obviously, due to the layout and separation of squares it will be impossible to complete all of them.

hugequiz Premium members will see the largest missed city in each possible next square at the end of the quiz as purple markers.

World Grid Population Challenge

First choose a grid size by typing '30', '20', or '10'. A grid of that size lat/long will be placed on the map (so if you choose '20' the grid width and height will be 20 degrees). Then, double click on the grid square with the highest population within it (based on world 10km x 10km population density estimates). The highest-population remaining square will give you 100 points, all the way down to 0 for the one with the smallest population. Try to obtain the most points by successively double-clicking on the highest-populated grid square.

414

World Grid Top 5 Challenge

Type 'easy' or 'hard' to begin the quiz. Easy is a 15-degree grid, hard is a 10-degree grid. Then, try to name the largest 50K+ cities in each square IN ORDER. To name a city, you must first click on the grid square to make it have a GREEN border. Then, type in the city answer for that square followed by a '.' (a period).

The squares will start with '0/5' (or maybe fewer cities if less exist in that square). Click on a square and enter the largest city in that square not yet answered (so, the largest city if you have yet to answer a city in that square). You will then have '1/5' and need to click on that square to name the 2nd largest city, and so on until you complete all the cities up to 5 (or less if less exist). If you name an incorrect city in a square it becomes 'locked' and turns red and you can no longer accumulate cities in that square.

You receive 1 point for the largest city in a square, 2 for the 2nd largest, and so on.

At the end of the quiz the largest remaining city you haven't named will be shown in each square.

World Landlocked Countries Placement Challenge

The object of this quiz is to drag the 44 landlocked countries into their correct positions on the map. More northern countries will appear at the beginning lined across the top, southern countries along the bottom. When you drag on a country you will see that country's name on the right of the map. Double-click the country to 'lock' it in place and you will obtain a score up to 100 based on how close the center of the country is to the actual center coordinates. Four small European countries begin placed in the Mediterranean between Spain and Italy (right above the white rectangle).

You can end the quiz at any time or double-click on all 44 countries to place them to end the quiz as well. There may be a couple instances of a country with portions that are disjointed (Azerbaijan for instance) - only the larger portion of the country is shown in this quiz.

hugequiz Premium users will see the correct outlines of the countries when the quiz is ended.

A randomly placed grid of that size will then be placed on the map.
