Challenge Chicago Geographer #7 – North American Expanding Circles

Can you beat Chicago Geographer? CG himself takes this quiz one time and your job is to beat his score!

You will begin in Chicago Geographer's city. Name any North American 10K+ population city in each 100 km circle/ring as the rings expand outward from your city of choice, trying to name the LARGEST CITY in each circle.

PLEASE NOTE - You must type a '.' (period) after each city to submit it to prevent answering another city with a name you would be have to type to get your answer - for example 'Jackson' would be answered trying to type 'Jacksonville.' If multiple cities have the name you submitted, only the largest one will be counted.

You accumulate points based on the population of the city you named in relation to the largest city in the circle. Naming the largest city will get you 100 points. A smaller city's point total will be the ratio of its population to the largest, so if you name a city of 75K people and the largest city has 100K, you get 75 points.

When you name a city in the first circle, it will cause another ‘ring’ of radius 100 km to appear outside that circle; you now need to name any North American 10K+ city in the new ring (but not within any previous circles/rings), again trying to name as large a city in that ring as possible. If a city is not within the next ring of that distance, the ring will keep expanding by that distance until a city falls within it.

World 1M+ Agglos Direction Challenge

The object of this quiz is to name (see NAMING NOTE below) as many World 1M+ agglomerations as possible starting from the position you choose without skipping agglos moving in the opposite direction. For example, if you choose 'S' you 'start' at the South Pole to begin and you are aiming to name the most southern World 1M+ agglo, then the 2nd most southern, and so on as you move north. Naming correct agglos increases the population counter - the object is to get the highest total population among all agglos you name. However, once you move in a direction you can't name agglos already passed by (i.e. covered in the blue shaded region).

NAMING NOTE: You must end each agglo name with a period - i.e. 'Tokyo.' - this prevents naming an agglo whose name is a partial name of the agglo you want to answer. If you name an agglo that has multiple answers, only the closest upcoming one will be answered for you, so you won't name the farther away agglo from the one you are trying to guess.

You don't start with a ton of time, however there is a 30 second time bonus for naming the next agglo in order, and a 15 second bonus for naming the 2nd or 3rd next one in order. So if you name well you can accumulate a lot of extra time.

The object of this quiz is to pick a world 1M+ agglomeration to start, then name successive 1M+ agglomerations such that the next agglo's first letter is the last letter of the current agglo and the next agglo is as close to the current agglo as possible. On this quiz alternates are generally accepted, however only the main (usually official) name is counted as it relates to naming the next agglo. Agglomerations of the same name will answer the closest one first. NOTE: You must type a '.' (period) after the agglo name to submit it. The same agglo cannot be used twice in this quiz.

For example, you start with 'Paris' - you are now trying to name a city starting with 'S' (the last letter of 'Paris') which is closest to Paris. If you answer 'Sevilla' - now you are trying to name the closest 1M+ agglo to Sevilla which starts with a 'A' and so on.

The quiz ends at the 25th agglo from the starting one. You get 100 points for naming the closest agglo on each step, and they decline based on the distance your agglo was from the closest. You get 15 minutes to complete the quiz.

You have 15 min or 20K km to travel Europe trying to total the highest total population of 10K+ cities visited. Cyprus, Iceland and Azores not included. How to play: Enter any 10K+ Euro city to begin. A marker will be placed there. Next, enter a (hopefully) nearby 10K+ city. The Google Maps route and next city will be displayed, and the population counter will accumulate. Continue ‘visiting’ more cities trying to get the highest population before reaching 20,000 km. Once you enter a city that pushes the total distance over 20,000 km, the game will end. NAMING NOTES – Some cities have the same names or must be entered to enter a longer city name…enter the city name followed by the FIRST TWO LETTERS of the country name (i.e. ‘brestfr’ or ‘london.’ (due to Londonderry)). Notes: two Pacific island groups are labeled according to their collective name (be it a country, territory, etc) and also have labels for separate island groups within them. Countries are the 197 sovereign states. Dep Terr are dependent territories. Adm Divisions are integral parts of countries, be they administrative divisions or Sections of a Sovereign State. De Facto State refers to a non-UN member state recognized as independent to some degree not included in the countries list. Other refers to a handful of special designations. Some of the entities may be disputed. I tried to make the typing easy by shortening the names unless a longer name is needed to accurately name the entity. IF AN ANTARCTIC CLAIM IS NOT NAMED TYPE (Country Name) followed by “Antarctica” to name the answer. If it has a name (other than so-and-so Antarctic Territory) you must type the name of the claimed Antarctic region. Antarctic claims are all below 60 deg South and DO NOT count toward any other category except Uninhabited. Uninhabited refers to entities which have no permanent settlement not including a base of revolving inhabitants (i.e. there needs to be a permanent year-round population of the same people). Europe 100 Km Coverage Challenge

Choose any 10K+ European city, then continue naming 10K+ cities which are within 100km of any previously named city. Naming notes: many places have similar names. For example, “Brest” is not unique. To choose Brest, France, simply type “brestfr”, using the first two letters of the country name, or ‘uk’ for the UK (same as for Ukraine). Also, some answers require typing in other answers you may not want to guess. In this case, if you want to answer “Hamburg”, simply type it..”Ham, Belgium” will not be chosen. You have 15 min or 20K km to travel Europe trying to total the highest total population of 10K+ cities visited. Cyprus, Iceland and Azores not included.
